Ive wanted a tattoo for a long time, and my birthday is coming up on the 17th and Im finally gonna do it.
Im planning on getting a small tattoo on the back of my neck, right below the hairline.
My parents arent thrilled about the idea and its not like Im trying to hide the tattoo from them, but rather I dont want it to be in their faces. Basically, if they dont notice, the better. Anyways, Im going home for Thanksgiving (Nov. 22) and I was wondering if I would be able to keep my hair down so they dont see it.
I was told that you have to keep your hair up and the area clean so it can heal. I would obviously keep it clean and put some sort of gel to keep it from rubbing, but is Thanksgiving too soon to put my hair down? This is a first tattoo so please excuse the naivety to the subject. How do you go about caring for a tattoo after you first get one?
Honestly, what's the pain factor?
Any insight would be much appreciated..
Thanks!

A tattoo normally takes about 2 weeks to heal, and another 2 weeks to fully settle in. During the healing process, it is best to keep it out it in the open and not let it dry out, but seeing that hair would not be constricting to the tattoo, I don't see why you couldn't let your hair down.

Once you get it, keep the bandage on for at least 2 hours after you are done. It is considered a wound and needs protection from bacteria and other infections. After that, clean the area at least twice a day, also using some form of ointment like A&D vitamin enriched ointment to keep it moisturized and healthy. You can also use fragrance and dye free lotions like Eucerin. Do not take baths or use swimming pools or soak your tattoo in any way, as this can be harmful to the tattoo. Also make sure to ask your tattoo artist about after care. They can probably provide you with the best way to take care of your new tattoo.

And on the pain factor... It really all depends on the person. I think tattoos hurt like hell, with some tender places hurting more than others. But no matter how much it hurts, its still tolerable for me, knowing that I'm putting myself through it and knowing that the outcome will be awesome. Just don't focus too much on the pain if it ends up hurting a lot.

Good luck with the tattoo!

I have a big tattoo on my arm and it took about a week to heal using bacitracin 3 times day. At 17 I feel you shouldn't get it done yet. Thats just my opinion being a father of a 14 year. What ever you decide good luck.

Mine took about 3 weeks.
Your tattoo artist should be able to tell you anything you want to know.
Pain-wise...its really not that bad.
If I can take it anyone can LOL

For a small tattoo after about 3 or 4 days, the scabbing should be falling off, almost all off actually. Once the scabs have fallen off, u can where ur hair down, just put some lotion on the tattoo. Ur only supposed to put bacitracin on it and cover it up with plastic for the first 24-48 hours anyway. I think you'll be fine. JUST DONT PICK AT UR TATTOO. thats my only advice.

it will take about a month
keep greased and not bother it too
when you go to the tattoo place they will gave you direction on how to take care of it
and with it being on your back of your neck it is near your bones it will hurt and you will feel it all the way down your back
