I have checked him for fleas-none found.I went ahead and gave him a flea bath thinking that they bite and jump off. I have used advantage on him through the summer. My other 2 dogs scratch every once in a while(normal),but this dog is driveing me crazy. My question is can I give him a benidryl and how much to give.would putting corn oil in his food help him if he's just itchy. He's 7yrs old and never been like this before.

If he doesn't have fleas, it's probably an allergy. You can give him Children's benadryl, one milligram per pound of body weight (I hide my dog's in soy nut butter or cheese).

What food do you have him on? Many national brands have wheat, soy, and/or corn as main ingredients, and many dogs are allergic to those. Try switching to a food that has no grains (Wellness, orijen, Canidae). It may also be a grass allergy- try rinsing his feet after walks outside.

No corn oil- fish oil might help.

He may even be allergic to the brand of flea repellent you use.

Flea shampoos don't work. They're not a repellant or a preventative, all they do is wash off current fleas.

Get some proper flea treatment from a vets, i.e Frontline, Advantage or Revolution. If your dog still scratches, get him to a vet because there are many other things that could be causing it.

You can check your dog for flea by combing with a flea comb, you're looking for little black comma shaped specks in clusters, these are flea dirts (poos) you're more likely to see them that the actual fleas.

Don't use ANY pet store flea treatments, like shampoos, powders etc - they don't work.

first give all of your dogs a flea bath again. Then buy a flea collar and put that on all of your dogs. This will prevent any fleas coming around. If your one dog is still itching you could try to find some mosturizer shampoo and use that. If none of this works take your dog tot he vet and egt his ears and stuff checked out. I do not think it is anything major though so dont be alarmed. =]

take him to the vet. have the vet do a skin scraping.
he might have allergies that would require medication for dogs. benadryl is a good medication for allergies but should NEVER EVER be given w/out a VETS okay, and dosage.

your dog might not even have allergies, considering his age and the fact that he's never displayed this behavior till now. he might have a form of mange...or any number of things.
it's best to get a vets opinion.
