Watching the race. Got online to check Nascar.com and they confirmed his death within a few minutes. Way earlier than the tv reports. I was devestated. All I can say, is that he died doing what he loved to do, and he died protecting his driver in the lead, and his son in 2nd. God rest his soul.

I remember I was sitting on my couch watching TV with a friend and my roommate walked in and blurted it out.
I was very sad - not only for Earnhardt's family but because Earnhardt was my father's favorite racer and he had died just a few months previously.
I like to think that Dad finally got to meet Dale and have a couple beers or two.

I was sitting watching it on TV. Mikey takes the flag, Jr finishes 2nd, but wheres Dale. Waiting to see Sr. coming around the corner to take 3rd, then the crash. Then you see the aftermath. How come Dales not getting out? Why are they moving so slowly. I call my brother on his cell phone. He was there that awful day. He did not know what happened as he left early cuz hes a Gordon fan, and Gordon wasout of the race. I hear the devestation in his voice. Then those words...after the crash in turn 4 of the Daytona 500 we lost Dale Earnhardt. It is still unbelievable to me.
I can still hear Darryl Waltrip "gee, I hope Dale's allright.

I am a long time dale sr. fan.it's hard to explain.i mean your watching your all time favorite driver, your hero, pushing his best friend and his son to a 1 -2 and with dale would have been 3 finish.when he spun i was so mad that he wasn't going to have a good finish but i was still glad to see mikey win.i never thought that it was a fatal hit.even when waltrip said he was worried about his buddy,it never crossed my mind.i went out for dinner and turned on the news and when i heard the new just broke down.even now it chokes me up.racing has and will never be the same without him rest in peace dale.3 forever.

Walking out of the turn 2 bleachers at Daytona right after MWaltrip crossed the finish line first. Heard about Earnhardt when we were sitting in a bar a couple blocks away.

Not a huge NASCAR fan...... but I remember sitting in my apartment watching the Daytona 500 when my roommates were ready go to pick up some stuff for a party we were going to have. I wanted to wait until the race was over, but of course I got the "What's the big deal with NASCAR" speech and took a big ribbing for it. While at the store, one of my roommates told me Dale Earnhardt crashed at the end of the race and died. I thought he was lying and trying to make fun of me for watching it.
When I got back and put on Sportscenter.....I found out it was the truth. A very sad day in sports!!

I was standing next to my brother-in-law watching him cry. I had never seen him cry before. I had no idea what was going. I didn't even know who Mr. Earnhardt was at the time. I don't follow nascar, or any sport really. I was just impressed that this man touched so many people life. I have never seen a nation get so emotional ove a sports star before, it was touching. I think people will honour him forever.

Sitting at the end of the bar, just flipped the channel to ESPN after the race, and heard something about it. I called a friend who was at the race and asked if he knew anything. He said that the car was covered when they towed it, he knew that something was wrong then. While i never was a fan of Dale, I didn't want to see him die on the track.

Well I was in a chair. Watching the Daytona 500. Saw Dale go into the wall. Sad. I just had an instinct feeling something was wrong.

I saw it on the paper the next morning. We had turned the race off the minute it was apparent Waltrip was gonna win and went to a family gathering. No one else was a race fan there and we got into the family mode...
How I felt, it was like when Elvis died when I was 8. Not as horrible as 9/11 or when my Mom passed away, but a terrible loss I still feel especially Sundays.

I was at home with some friends watching the race. I was devestated, we all were. I cried for a week. I went to MIS that June for a race and that sound of silence, the missing man F-16 fighter-jet formation fly over & 180,000's people holding up 3 fingers for the first 3 laps in complete silence was the most awesome tribute I have ever seen. Not a dry eye in the stands, I was proud to be a part of it.
