It is against religon and establishment, but it is really in no way or form anti god, just anti Catholic church in Rome, its actually sort of against science as well...

The Deamon is actually a conscious, like the voice we all have or something...

I think this author thinks he is more intelligent than he really is, its pretty cut and dry, good story, easy to read between the lines though and see exactly what hes trying to say, thing is, that is different than what he says he saying so....

The writer of the Book, Philip Pullman, said in in interview that he is NOT ATHIEST, but rather anti-Protestant.

Jesus does not make any appearance in his book because that was a subject he did not believe was suitable for the book. This book and the other two are neither pro- or anti- Jesus.

Unlike in the Narnian Chronicles where God (The Emperor) is never seen and only scantily referred to, God actually plays a major roll in the series, and eventually is a character, though his physical appearance in book three (The Amber Spyglass) is not very long.

If Pullman was anti-god, I highly doubt he'd have written a series with as much spirituality as he did.

I think the Jesus character is not like the OT God at all. I was first made aware of that after reading a book by a different British author. I read 'The Golden Compass' author is an athiest.
I guess it could be pro-Jesus but still anti-religion-Well, maybe pro-Gnostic?

The book The Golden Compass is anti-religious. There are various aspects of it and the later books that have a go at institutional religion. For example the witch Ruta Skadi says:

For all of [the Church's] history...it's tried to suppress and control every natural impulse. And when it can't control them, it cuts them out." (see intercision). Skadi later extends her criticism to all organized religion: "That's what the Church does, and every church is the same: control, destroy, obliterate every good feeling."

Mary Malone who appears later states that "the Christian religion…is a very powerful and convincing mistake, that's all." She was formerly a Catholic nun, but gave up her vows when the experience of being in love caused her to doubt her faith.

I heard though that any religious aspects have been removed from the film.

The Golden Compass was written by a known athiest named Phillip Pullman. This is the first movie in a triology, Pullman has said that he is going to kill God in the minds of Children. In the end it willnot be a good religious movie, an athiest isn't going to give God the glory. You are exactly right!!!! Pass it on!!!

The Golden Compass was written by a man that hates all religion and is especially hateful to Christianity. Avoid anything to do with this piece of ****. Warn everyone to stay away!

Here are some quotes.
"Atheism suggests a degree of certainty that I'm not quite willing to accede. I suppose, technically, you'd have to put me down as an agnostic. But if there is a God, and he is as the Christians describe him, then he deserves to be put down and rebelled against." —Philip Pullman, author of the fantasy series His Dark Materials

"'My books are about killing God.' So said Philip Pullman, author of The Golden Compass, the movie version of which is soon to be released.

It even has a meet your Demon link on it! If anything was ever from Satan... this is it! Don't even buy stuff from companies that are sponsoring this stuff. Atheism has become more and more hate filled and this is an attack aimed at the kids... getting kids to pick their demon... sick!!!!!!

Not from what I am understanding.....the author is an atheist who wrote it in response to The Chronicles of Narnia and has had some very harsh things to say about Christianity. Do more research re: author. I don't know more because I already know enough to know that my family will not be seeing the movies or reading the books. :)

According to snopes, that website that likes to demystify the myths, the author wrote the books as a contrast to the Lion, witch wardrobe series and was very much anti religion and wanted to see religion wiped away.

I seriously doubt this movie, aimed at children, will be in any way obviously or blatantly anti religious, though. The studios still have to make money, you know.

I still want to go see it.
