I've dealt with this when I've had a lot on my mind. It's a tricky one, particularly if you don't want to involve the use of sleep medications that may become habit forming over time. I've had success with becoming more active during the day, but not too close to bedtime. Also, getting enough "wind-down" time before turning in always seems to work... at least 30 minutes with a book before bed helps me a LOT! When I'm really sleep deprived because of a few nights of insomnia, I will take a dose of my children's liquid benadryl about an hour before bed. (Read the label for correct dosage, of course!) It really does the trick for me! Good luck!

I used to have this same problem. First off, make sure there is no noise or light, which i'm assuming you already do. Do not watch tv or go on the computer for an hour before you go to bed, and 15 minutes before you go to bed relax (do yoga if you enjoy that). Drink hot water or tea 30 minutes before you go to bed. Make sure that you have the right sheets. Some people like weight on them when they sleep (use a douvet) and some people like no weight (just use sheets). If you have husband who snores, you can get special scents for that and put them next to the bed, which should help stop the snoring. If you still can't sleep through the night, there is medications you can take that your doctor can give you.

Are you waking up every 90 minutes or so? That usually indicates a pain threshold and you need to figure out where the pain is.

Try taking a Tylenol (not PM) before you go to bed or an antihistamine like Coricidin in case something is swelling.

Are you waking up because you have to go potty? Then stop drinking fluid three hours or more before you go to bed. And do NOT drink alchol after dinner.

Otherwise, just roll over and go to sleep.

As the previous poster said, melatonin might help. Valerian root is also good.

You're better off than me, I have problems falling and staying asleep. The only thing that works for me is Ambien. I hate taking drugs, but I tried everything else and I thought I was losing my mind from lack of sleep.

Good luck.

Take Valerian Root. When I have sleep problems taking some of that with some sleepy time tea works to get a full night's sleep.

i recognize the way you experience. It takes me about 3 or extra hours of staring on the ceiling and tossing and turning to finally flow to sleep, yet then I awaken a minimum of two times an hour. that is so complicated!!!
