I also went through a period when I felt out of place. I still do at times. I focus on my family and helping other Verteran's when I can. Just hang in there. You might think about going back if you really miss it that much.

I feel the same way you do. I was in the Regular Army and National Guard from 98 to 05. I miss it too, even the deployment I miss sometimes. I had a lot of fun, and met some of the best friends I ever had. I miss the cameraderie.
I worked my way through college and have a full time job now. Film school, that's cool, that's exactly the kind of work I'd love to get into also. My job now has nothing to do with film, but I'm still aiming for it.
Yeah there has been more than 1 day since I left the service where I said to myself, "I wish I could be back in that old job again!" It still crosses my mind from time to time.

I spent 21 years in the Army, and miss it almost everyday. I don't find any gratification in anything I have done in the 14 years I have been retired. There is no job satisfaction, no real camaraderie, no feeling of accomplishment, plus the civilian businesses are so screwed up, its like they have no sense of direction, no loyalty, no honor. They screw you, back stab you, cut your job without blinking an eye. If they know you were military, they often treat you like you are stupid.
Sorry, can't tell you what to do, but from the sounds of it, you need to go back in, and work on your plans for the future, be it tats or film. Not saying to make it a career, but it will give you the space and away from the things bothering you and let you figure things out. Kind of like get back in a comfort zone.
Good luck.

I don't know that this is a phase in your life or you genuinely want it. I know I feel about the same way. I don't miss Iraq or the B.S., but I miss the camaraderie and pride. I have not felt proud of what I do since the Army. You just don't want to be one of those guys who goes back and wishes he didn't. Hang in there, you'll be all right.

If you can't come up with any good reason NOT to go back in, it may be a very good career for you.
I spent 6 years in the Navy, and after I got out, there was a transition period when I kept thinking about going back. But for me, there were areas that I didn't like about that kept me from going back. I have lots of very good memories from my time, and I don't regret doing it at all (if I could go back in time, I would do it all over again). I just didn't see myself making a career out of it.

You value pride and honor and your options are tattoes, film school, or the marines? Sounds like a no-brainer to me! Go, baby! And while you're in there, or over there, make some plans that you can be proud of, find a brotherhood that works for you 24/7. (Church works for some people.)
