If it is truly something special, I will eat it. There are some guidelines I use for this:
Have you seen it or has access to it in the last 2 weeks? If so, it's not that special, so hands off.
Have you seen it recently, but have not eaten it in the last 4 weeks? If you have kept your hands off for a whole month, go ahead and have a reasonable portion.
Think about things on the bite, taste, and portion level. Savor the BITE of a high fat food, and decide if just one more bite would be appropriate. If you are going to a holiday party and bringing something high fat, make the portions bite-sized for this purpose.
Pay attention to the TASTE. Even if something is good for you, if it doesn't really taste good, it is wasting your holiday calories.
Manage your PORTIONS. If you want variety, cut the portions of everything except fresh fruits and veggies in half or thirds, and don't go back for more. Just because your mom or aunt wants you to eat more of her special pumpkin pie, there is no reason to either blow up in anger or gorge on a double serving - nicely say, "No thank you."
Fit holiday parties in as your "cheat" meal days.

I will allow myself to enjoy meals with friends & family as well as the food at holiday parties. When I am home, that is when I will make the adjustments. Fewer snacks between meals, eating something healthy before I go out so I don't over indulge. And when people come to my house for the parties, they are being sent home with the leftovers so I am not tempted.
