It means that people love to run their mouths when they know nothing can happen to them for it. But when they are in danger of being confronted for what they will say, they shut up. It's like if somebody calls you and says they are 6'5 300 pounds and wants to kick your butt, you talk back over the phone, but if that same person comes up to you in person, you don't say anything.

My interpretation is that it's easy to be brave when you are standing back and watching but it's not so easy to be brave if you were in the middle of it!
are you a safe distance away or are you in the middle?

I think it's self-explanatory.

If your really close to an obvious danger (eg. a car on fire) then you need to be really brave(depending on the circumstances) to stay and help. (Or really stupid if there's no one in or near to the car.)

However if you're watching the burning car from a hillock at some (safe) distance (and probably reporting the incident with your mobile to the press) your bravery is totally false - particularly if you have seen but ignored the burning people within the vehicle!

I would take it to mean that its easy to say "hey no problem I could deal with that" if you are not really in the situation - but when your confronted face to face with whatever the issue may be its not as easy to be brave

basically it means it's easy to talk trash and act brave when your not in any danger, but how you react in a situation defines you as a person. You know how at work a customer who blows up and treats you bad and you handle it well and there is always some smartalic that says after it is all over he or she is lucky i didn't get involved cause i would have, but when it was going on they were hiding out.

It's easy to be brave when you are removed from the situation. My cat was really brave when he saw another cat in the yard and all that separated them was a sliding glass door. He would cower when we opened it up exposing him to that stray that wandered in the yard.

I'd say that it means that you can be brave and try things if you know that it's safe, and you won't get hurt or or anything like that.

It's like a poodle in the window barking at the rottweiler outside. The poodle knows from where he is the rott can't get to him so he can bark all he wants to. It's like most people that post on line. They can talk all the crap they want to in the comfort of home or wherever knowing that they wouldn't dare say some of the stuff in person.
