Getting HDTV over the air is actually quite easy. If you have an TV with an HDTV tuner (ATSC,) you can simply use a regular antenna to get a signal. It does not have to specifically be an HDTV Antenna.
I am a broadcast engineer and we were in our shop testing an HDTV flat screen we were about to install. My co-worker simply took a "whip" antenna that came off an old cheap TV. He attached another cable using electrical tape to it to give it some more length and set the antenna on a box about 2 feet from a window. We got most of the local HDTV broadcasts in the area with this jury-rigged setup!

We are in Washington, DC. If you are in a major metro area, getting a signal should be easy.

You can also get a digital box from your cable or satellite provider and hook it to your TV that way, but, of course, that will cost you.

You can put up an antenna, but the type and size depend on how far away you are from the broadcast towers.

The government has a website where you type in your address and it will show you the direction and distance to all TV towers around your home. It will advise you if you can use an indoor or outdoor antenna, and what direction to point it to.

If you can use an indoor antenna - avoid Terk. Try to find the Phillips Silver Sensor for about $30. I have loaned mine to 4 people here at work, and three of them ran out and bought their own after trying mine.
