Here's how I would do LA to NYC in that time frame. It's going to be a long journey but if you want to see the country this is going to take you many places.
Day 1
Stay in Santa Monica and check out the 3rd Ave Prom and have diner on the pier
Day 2
Check out Hollywood- sunset and vine, all that stuff, if there's any tapings go check those out, at night go check out UCB, groundlings. If
.
Day 3-5
Drive to Vegas. Do Vegas.
Gamble, Go see shows. Vegas is Exhausting.
Day 6
Drive to Flagstaff AZ. Go to the grand canyon- it's amazing.
Day 7
Drive to Santa Fe
Hang out in Santa Fe that night. It's a cool little town, there's lots to eat and the vibe is amazing
Day 8
Drive to Denver. I've never been to Denver- but I hear it's something to defiantly see.
Day 9
Drive to Riverton WY
Again- haven't been there but you'll need an easy day after all of the stuff before.
Day 10
Drive to Yellowstone. Check it out Drive to Billings MT. In parts of Montana you can speed, but you better be ready to fork over $5 cash if you're caught.
Day 11
Stay somewhere in North Dakota. I've never been there.
Day 12
Drive to Minneapolis. Awesome city!!! Do much to do. Hope there's not too much snow!!
Day 13-14
Drive to Chicago. The windy city. Quite a bit of American history. Gangsters and Blues music, theater- you should be able to find something to see.
Day 15
Drive to St. Louis. Wow. What a city!! See the Arc. Check out all of the free arts. So much to do.
Day 16
Drive to Nashville or Memphis TN. Pick one, they're both fun.
Day 17
Drive to Charleston, WV. I'm from here :) . It's a small city but it's beautiful. The next leg of the trip will take you through some amazing views. Stop along the way for some breathtaking sites, there's plenty of them.
Day 18
Washington DC. If you can't find something to check out in DC there's something wrong with you!!!
Day 19- 21
Drive to NYC. Have fun in NYC!! SOOOO much to do...
So feel free to make adjustments and changes to this, go where you want. Having made cross country trips myself, there's so much, actually too much to see. This may just be what I would do if I was on a 3 week time table.
If you want to spend more time in each city I suggest picking either MT or TN- otherwise you'll spend a couple days in crappy towns with nothing to see.
You might just want to take route 66 from Santa Monica to Chicago and then get to NYC from there. That's a classic American road trip.

That's awesome! I would so love to take a 3 week road trip across America! If you go up north through California first I suggest visiting San Francisco and Monterey to soak up some Northern California culture. If you're interested enough in John Steinbeck (the most popular writer to ever live in California, arguably, and one of the most famous to live in the twentieth century, and if you don't already know who I mean then you probably won't listen to my next advice) you could head to nearby Salinas to visit his home and any other interesting places in that area. Also Napa is beautiful.
If you start out heading west I suggest the Grand Canyon in Arizona, the four corners, and Monument Valley--you know, the great big desert with the mesas all over the place that practically every western has been filmed in. I read you can get up before sunrise to take a hiking tour up to the top of one of the mesas (before they get burning hot from the sun) and watch the sun rise. That's one thing I must do before I die.
If you take the middle route, you could stop in Las Vegas for a while. That would certainly be fun. Just don't blow all your money.
I don't know what's in Montana, but South Dakota has Mount Rushmore. Also, Kansas City, MO has more fountains than anywhere else but Rome, and is well-known for its clean water.

San Diego! There's lots of things to do. You can check out the San Diego Zoo, SeaWorld and Legoland (all 3 are great for kids) Especially SeaWorld. San Diego has beautiful beaches too. I'd visit San Diego & Los Angeles to see Disney Land and/or Universal Studios. San Diego is also only 2-2.5 hrs from LA. NYC is pretty cool too, if you can go from Cali to NYC u shud do it!

I drive across the country several times. Love it.
The best part is around I-70 and I-40 to see those unique Utah and Arizona canyons, rocks, so stop by at Flagstaff holbrook gallop and green river, grand junction for several days.
There isn't too much to see MT and TN, you must take big circle to cover those two states.
Must visit sites in the country:
Grand canyon, yellow stone, Yosemite and Niagara falls

Well, let's see...hummm...
Well the first stop has to be Vegas...then Salt Lake City, then Jellystone National Park, then Mall of America in Minnesota, then Chicago, then Branson, Missouri, then Dollywood, then Washington, DC, then Philadelphia, then New York City, then Boston/Cape Cod...ummm...stop right there or you will drown

Buy the Rand-McNelly street atlas and some tour guides. The only advice I can give, not knowing what you are interested in.

Whatever you do, do not drive through Texas. It takes forever and it's pretty boring to look at. But I would go through Utah, and maybe my home state of Wisconsin/Minnesota. They're very pretty. Just go to as many states as you can. They all have something to offer.
