Studies have shown that people who live with stress or situational depression for a year or more have physical changes occur in the brain. The hippocampus, part of the limbic system that manufactures and regulates the neurotransmitters responsible for mood, actually shrinks compromising it's ability to work.

This research showed that the real reason that SSRIs work may be a side effect that causes new brain cells to be born.

Sleep is a major factor in spurring neurogenesis, another is quitting alcohol if there is significant use.
I've had problems with depression my whole adult life and did not have good results with medication, however, I had dramatic and immediate results using St. John's wort. I have yet to find anyone whose results have been as impressive, but most people I know report improvement. I also take melatonin and Valerian root as sleep aids and Omega-3 fish oil which promotes brain function. For fish oil to have maximum benefit, simple diet changes should be made, changing from vegetable oil to olive oil or canola oil in cooking, real butter rather than imitation.
Reducing stress can also be important for reducing depression, the two feed of each other. Fresh air and exercise reduce stress, so does having a pet.

about 5 years ago, I started to fall into a really depressive episode. At first I thought it was only because I had a bad break from a relationship but the feelings wouldn't go away even after I got a new girlfriend. It was wrecking my life until a point where it was seriously affecting my work and personal life.
She was very worried but at the same time couldn't understand why I was still sad and thought that I still couldn't let go of my previous relationship. Being the wonderful person that she is, she put aside her feelings and suggested I go for psychiatric evaluation. Many months later and even more anti-depressants, I was not coming close to being better at all.
After doing some research online, I found out the real cause as you described it really makes a lot of sense and purchased this program. The results were simply astonishing. I read this book over three times and put all words in action. Using this method, I've kept my depression at bay ever since. Up to date I'm still living happily with my girlfriend.

In addition to the St. John's Wort remedy another poster suggests, please try DHEA and Valerian. They really help. Hope you feel better soon. Also, try micro-motivation. That's where you do something, anything, a little bit at a time (like cleaning your room, working on a project, whatever) and you tell yourself it's only a few seconds of your time just do it. After a while, you find yourself doing more micro-projects (even picking up a few things off a dinner table, sounds silly but it works) and like forcing yourself to smile (which has been shown in medical research to trigger your "happy hormones"), you'll find that you actually feel better, even for these small insignificant little projects. You find yourself cleaning the whole table and feeling good about it (as an example). And never ever let someone tell you that there is nothing wrong with you because that is bologne. You have a bonafide illness, just as real as the chicken pox. And good for you to be looking for ways to feel better because I can tell you from experience that this is the absolute first step. You will feel better soon.

most depressions are caused by chemical imbalances in the brain, but it can also be hereditary and can begin at anytime. the only herbal natural treatment that i know of is St. Johns wart, beware of internet products that claim to treat these, they don't work and have not been tested at all by the FDA and may not be safe. If the St. John's wart doesn't help, you'll need to see a physician and find one that you can be open with about your symptoms and there are websites that have a test that you can print and take, then take to him that will help him diagnose which type of depression and the level of depression and anxiety if you have any. Try these sites www.med.nyu.edu/Psych/screens/depres.html or www.lexapro.com or www.cymbalta.com. Keep in mind it may take time to find the right med or combination of meds but when you do, you will feel so much better. Take care!

The greatest cause of depression is "our giving more weight to Society's thought ". Because we never evaluate anything of ours with ourself. We always compare our achievements and every aspect of our life with that of our friends mostly and at times with that of our neighbours and enemies.
This creates a great deal of stress and makes us feel that we should achieve great things within a very short span of time. Therefore in a haste to prove our capability to the world we take hasty and half baked decisions which lead us to failure in attaining our goal. this causes depression.
Therefore Understand that we live for ourself and only ourself and not for anyone else. The only aim should be to be good without disturbing others and start living just the way we want to live.

I believe that the natural treatment for depression is laughing. Laugh your head up even if U have no reason at all.
The most important cause of depression I believe it is overpopulation. MY theory is that our world is sick of so many human beings and it is trying to get rid of some (if not all) of them.

I over"came" depression through medication, then i no longer had insurance. I was scared and tired of depending on meds. I needed more than a pill I needed God.Read Philippians 4:6-7 Some people need meds to live and others just want them to hide away from the "problem".
