I am thinking about purchasing a PS3, what are the major benefits of having the 80GB version over the 40GB version, are save files really that large?I recall from my PS2 the saved games are merely kilobytes in size. What can people possibly save on their hard drives that requires 80GBs?

I just got the 40 Gb a few days ago so i was in your delema not to long ago. =P Basically, they are both exactly the same scratch for the HDD size, memory card slots and backwards compatability.

Here was my reasoning. I have a PS2. So scratch the backwards compatability. Besides, the PS3 isn't "truly" backwards compatible. Unlike the 60 Gb which had the Emotion engine that the PS2 uses, the 80 Gb verion doesn't. It uses emulation sofeware to run PS3 games. So it won't play ALL Ps2 games (only the ones that have emulation software created for them) and on top of that, they might not play as good on the Ps3. (ask any Xbox 360 owner about their emulated Bacwards compatibility >=( )

Second, I have no reason for the memory cards. It has a hard drive and usb ports. If i want to load pictures, i use the usb port. If i need more than 2 usb ports, i'm sure i can find one of those devices that make 1 usb port turn into 4 or more.

It plays Blu rays brilliantly and has the Wi fi and all the other bells and whistles as the 80 Gb. Theirs not a lot worth downloading on the Playstaion Store, ( trust me, i've looked) Blu rays don't need hard drive space so really the 40 Gb is fine for me.

Side note though. Some PS3 games take a crap load of memory. I have ratched and clank and the game file took up 413 Mb. I've heard others tell me that Heavenly sword takes up 4 Gb and Lair takes up 2 Gb. But they said that only the exclusive Ps3 titles take that much space. THe others are smaller they said. That's the only reason to me to get the 80 Gb. But then again, you can always upgrade the HDD with a store bought 2.5" Sata notebook HDD. It even shows you how to in the Ps3 manual. So if you find yourself in need of more space down the road, you won't be out of luck. Just remember to back up your old hard drive to something that way you can transfer it back to the Ps3's new hard drive.

Oh, and i'm not to particular towards Motorstorm. =P

hope that helps.

The biggest differences between the 40GB and 80GB is the backward compatibility. 40GB has none, you'll need the 80GB version. The 40GB version has 2 usb ports, 80GB version has 4 usb ports. Both have built in wi-fi, bluetooth, and blu-ray. 40GB has no memory card readers, 80GB does. Both allow you to upgrade the hard drive of the units without voiding the warranty. There's a lot of free downloadable content coming from the PlayStation Network in the future, plus the music and videos you may put in, also saving files of PS3 games.
For the price difference, and depending on whether you're going to be playing PS2 games, or copying things from memory cards (compact flash, memory stick, etc...) then the 80GB version is probably the best fit.

Well one of the biggest differences between the 40GB and 80GB editions is the backward compatibility. 40GB has none, so if you're looking to play PS2 games on it, you'll need the 80GB which uses software emulation. Some of the other differences; 40GB version has 2 usb ports, 80GB version has 4 usb ports. Both have built in wi-fi, bluetooth, and blu-ray. 40GB has no memory card readers, 80GB does. Both systems allow you to upgrade the hard drive of the units without voiding the warranty.

Buy the 80GB PS3, it has more hard drive space, built in WiFi, the flash card slots, backward compatibility with PS1 and PS2 games, 2 more USB slots, and a free game.

If you buy the 40GB PS3 you might regret it, but the 80GB PS3 has everything that you will ever need for gaming and home entertainment. The 40GB PS3 can play PS1 games, but it can't play PS2 games. Just go with the 80GB PS3.

i prefer to propose you wait a whilst by way of fact sony announce at e3 that there is going to be a clean ps3 kind spoke of as ps3 center which has an analogous function by way of fact the 40gb ( no memory card slot, 2 usb port, and can't play ps2 video games,) in spite of the shown fact that it has a greater physically powerful complicatedcontinual and a dualshock 3 controller the only with the rumble function for 399 in u . s . ( sorry i forgot with regard to the launch date for the ps3 center )

40gbs u cant.....

80 gbs perks
there are alot of free download content from the playstation store comming in the future, (ex. PS HOME) , plus the music and videos u may put in, plus the saving of the files of ps3 games. they will add up with the saved files from ps2 . u might as well stretch for the 80 gb. theres a good reason why they upgraded...

i havent seen the 20 gb sell much...cause its just basic....no bluetooth.
