whoa. my whole family is immigrants. except me. and they respect the great country that I brought them to. So of course they celebrate the Fourth of July. And there is always a xmas at my house, it isn't so much a religious holiday(origins dubious) as an excuse for me to go shopping and buying stuff which I love to do.

I'm certain there are atheists who do celebrate the holidays but mainly for its secular, commercial appeal rather than for its religious undertones. For the vast majority of people, the "spirit of X-mas" is merely about giving to your fellow man and not so much about the Biblical account of the birth of Jesus.

However, I'm one of those who cares about NEITHER holiday so I'll just leave it at that.

Christmas is so commercialized it has no religious value anymore. Besides, everyone that lives in America is an immigrant one way or another.

No, because Christmas has become more a secular holiday than a religious one. All you have to do is look at the TV commercials, decorations, holiday bazaars, etc.... all designed to make money or con you into spending money. Sorry, but it's the truth.

OK, you're getting coal in your stocking!!

I'm not one of those people who get off on telling others what to do. I imagine if they don't want to light off fireworks and eat hot dogs, they don't have to. Just like if I don't wish to participate in the insanity of Christmas, I don't have to.

Nah Christmas was a pagan holiday until the Christians assimilated it into their religion. The analogy is more like:

atheist is to yuletide as christian is to Christmas.

You can't tell anyone not to celebrate something in a democracy (less it is not a very good one; i.e no freedom of speech)
