Because they would rather believe anything that they are told than think for themselves.

This is why...
Only people that refuse to see the truth can believe in evolution. There is no proof, but there is SOLID proof that the Earth can not be more then 30,000 years old...
1) The Sun is Shrinking.
Does the size of the sun change over the years? Recently, "John A. Eddy (Harvard -Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and High Altitude Observatory in Boulder) and Aram A. Boornazian (a mathematician with S. Ross and Co. in Boston) have found evidence that the sun has been contracting about 0.1% per century--?? corresponding to a shrinkage rate of about 5 feet per hour.
o.1% would mean a half-life of 10,000 years, so 10,000 years ago, it would be twice as big as it is now, 20,000 years, 4 times as big, 30,000 years, 8 times as big...
The inverse square law means the gravity would be 64 times then what it is now. What would it be in 65 million years?
2) Carbon dating is based on 3 assumptions that can not be proven.
1. The amount of carbon-14 in the body is the same as in the air.
2. The amount that was in it at the time of death is the same as in the air today.
3. Nothing has removed or washed-out any of the carbon-14
4. The rate of decay is a constant.
1,3,and 4 are assumptions. There is no way to prove them.
2 was proven wrong at lest twice, never proven right. The amount of Carbon-14 in the air is still increasing, and it will take about 30,000 years to reach equilibrium.
3) The geologic column is based on circular reasoning.
The use the bones to tell the age of the rocks, and the rocks to tell the age of the bones.
If the different layers are different ages, then why are there plants, and even animals going through several layers.
4) Every "missing link" has been proven to be a honest mistaken or a deliberate fraud.
1) Lucy.
A 3 foot skeleton of a chimp, the “evidence” that she was becoming human was her knee joint, which was found more then a mile away, and over 200 feet in the earth.
2) Heidelberg Man.
Built by a jaw bone that was considered to be quite human.
3) Nebraska Man.
Built from a pigs tooth
4) Piltdown Man.
The jaw was a modern ape
5) Peking Man.
Lived 500,000 years ago, but no remains were ever found.
6) Neanderthal Man.
Old Man with arthritis.
7) New Guinea man.
?
8) Gro-Magnon Man.
Skeletal Structure is exactly the same as modern man.
5) The oil pressure under in the Earth is weakening. It has been calculated the 45.000 years ago, the pressure would have broken the rocks, and exploded out.

I don't know about religious people. I'm a Christian and don't have any problem believing the earth could be several billion years old. The reason I would believe it is, to my understanding, because in the account of creation in Genesis we read the"earth was without form; and void" The word "was" actually reads in the Greek "became" which suggests to me that the Lord actually renewed the earth about 6000+years ago and could well have therefore been at some time as we know it today. I hope this helps! God Bless.

I am religious and though I do study the topic it is only for informative interest only. The important question is Where is humanity going to be 30,000 years from now. You science without wisdom is lethal. Oil spills killing birds, cows and pigs dying by the millions, animal extinction of many sorts, Forest fires and drought and famine in many places, added concerns about nuclear catastrophes.

Are you still worry about how old is the Earth?
We are going to end up eating MP3 players, PSPs and rocks, limousine cars, etc.

I recommend you to start praying that God's understanding comes to men.

Why do the jesus freaks think the earth is 6,000 years old?

Someone added up the ages of the major players in the book, added 2000 years and got 6,000.

I'm not making this up, strange as it might sound. This is actually the logic base they operate from. Geology and biology be damned! We've got a 1,500 year old book and a calculator!

poor students of their educational system (math & reading skills) mostly!

if a blink of an eye is a thousand years & you blink no less then 87 times a day & it takes you 6 days to create some thing how many years actually passed while creating it???

Not all of them do. In fact, it is only a very stubborn, highly conservative, and narcissically provincial minority who believe that nonsense.

Unfortunately, most of them are part of the current American President's base. Hence the GOP's war on science.
