I'm 3 months pregnant. Last month when I went for my first prenatal appointment they did a pap smear and they said it wasn't abnormal but I might have HPV. Next month they want to do a colposcopy and a biopsy. My doctor said it might cause bleeding but it's not going to cause a miscarriage. But if it does show that I have HPV they can't do anything to treat it until after I have the baby so is it even worth the chance of bleeding and the stress of worrying about having a miscarriage or should I just wait until after the baby is born.

Also, I had a pap smear in January 2007 and everything was fine, I have only been with one man since then and he's only been with me so how did I get the HPV

There is no cure for HPV, but they CAN treat it! I got it from my husband (surprise, surprise!!), but then I knew he was no virgin when we go married. They only treat HPV when you have an outbreak, and you have to do the treatment, because it spreads. They can remove it by 'freezing' it with carbon dioxide or in the O.R. (burning or freezing). If it's on the outside, they usually just give you a topical creme, but it doesn't always work.

HPV can be dormant for up to 20 years, so you may have it without even knowing it. Finding out sooner is better, since HPV can cause cervical cancer. You have to find out, if you do have it, your doctor may suggest a c-section to lower the risk of passing it on to the baby. If you're in the middle of an outbreak they may recommend a c-section, if not you can have vaginal delivery.

Good luck hun! I know this seriously sucks, but take comfort... it's the most common STD out there, easily treatable and it's nothing to be ashamed of.

Definately get it checked out with the colposcopy. The colposcopy itself is just an exam under a microscope, so that's always a little weird. If they decide to do a biopsy, you'll spot for a few days. But they biopsy your cervix, not your uterus, which is where the baby is. So there's no danger to your baby, or else they wouldn't do it.
Men carry HPV as well. And it is treatable. However, they probably won't do any treatment until after you have the baby. The whole point of the biopsy is to see if the type of HPV you have is cancerous or not. Some types of HPV can lead to cancer, other types heal on their own. That's what the biopsy will determine.
I've had two of them in the past year, then had the Gardisil shot, the next pap after that was clean and clear, no hpv! It's really no big deal to have a colposcopy. I would say to do it just to be sure it's not the cancerous type. Better safe than sorry - for your baby.

A colposcopy is no big deal. It's uncomfortable, since someone is literally staring at you for that long. It's like a really long vaginal exam. It can be uncomfortable, especially when they take the biopsy, but there is no danger to the baby whatsoever. You will bleed because of the biopsies they do, but it will be spotting for a day or two.

You do want to get it checked out for sure. HPV is a warning sign of cervical cancer. That is really what they are checking for. Just how abnormal those cells are.

For starters, just because you had a pap and HPV didn't show up doesn't mean you didn't already have it. Also, your partner could have had HPV and not even known it. Most men don't know they are carriers. Sadly, HPV is becoming like the flu. Everyone gets it. Sometimes it clears up on it's own. Sometimes you have to seek medical treatment. But the only way to know is a colposcopy.

Get it done NOW!! Do not wait. And don't worry about how you got it. The fact is (like almost all women out there) you did. Get it checked.

Most OB's will not do biopsies during pregnancy. Biopsy during pregnancy has a increased risk of infection, premature labor/birth and miscarriage. Colposcopies on the other hand are perfectly safe. If you are having problems with odors I wouldn't hesitate to call your OB. Colposcopy is very uncomfortable but there is no pain after.

You really need to get a colpocspy that determines if the hpv is cancerous or not, and unless you were born with it (from your mom), than your boyfriend gave it to you TRUST ME!! but if it's not the cancerous type than you'll be fine, and there is no cure or treatment for hpv (the non cancerous kind)

I agree with what the others have said but it is important for you and your doctor to know if you do have HPV because that can cause genital warts. If you happen to have it and it causes that, it is very important to know because if you have a vaginal birth it is very possible to transfer it to the baby.

Good luck!!

Well how can you be certain you are the only one he has been with. I would have it checked now, why wait. Your child will need a healthy mom to take care of it, so you need to be sure what you are facing.
