I would say that if a person felt that he/she were prone to this disease (genetic or environmental history), he/she should take some precautions to avoid repeating the cycle.
Find some friends who don't drink and prioritize making social occasions about things OTHER than alcohol.
Don't keep it in the house and consciously eliminate or minimize the use of alcohol.
Seek other coping strategies such as counseling, prescription meds, etc. if depression is a trigger for drinking.
Join a support group such as Al-Anon, especially if someone in the family is an alcoholic to learn other ways not to be co-dependent and break the cycle.
Turn to personal faith as a source of strength, and seek out a church that does not include alcohol in its rituals and church-sponsored events.

Being an alcoholic is like being pregnant. You either are or you are not. Alcoholism is a disease and you can be an alcoholic without ever drinking a drop. The thing is you never know until you drink, so if you never want to know or be one, never drink. There are drunks, people that just like to drink and drink to get drunk and there are people that cannot stop drinking once they start. The latter are alcoholics. If you decide to drink, drink moderately. Give yourself a limit and stick to it. Never drink and drive. Never make a decision while drinking, and never fall in love while drunk. If you find yourself doing all those things after drinking, you are probably an alcoholic and need to rush yourself to the closest clinic and get help. Drinking for an alcoholic is the percursor to losing everything. If your father is an alcoholic and you are a son, your chances are pretty good that the gene is in there so take care. If you are a daughter, you are not as likely to carry on the family tradition but definitely if you get pregnant do not drink..

Stay away from the stuff. If you drink it, eventually you are going to use it too much. Alcohol is a drug. You drink more because more makes you feel better than the last time. You use excuses that you are feeling depressed, it's for pain, (mental & Physical), you say that my friends do it why shouldn't I. Leave it alone, an it will leave you alone.

in truth & not joking at all "Just avoid alcohol it's self"
if you do not put your self in a position where you are around or own alcohol you avoid it!
my dad at parties gets a regular glass of 7up & lets people think he is drinking. & nurses the glass for a long time before getting another one!

For one thing, don't drink. I am 21 and despite numerous pressures, I haven't once drank alcohol and don't plan to either. I simply do not understand the appeal of it given what large amount can do to you (health wise and stupidity wise).
Even if you do drink, moderation is key.

Drinking is not bad... but drinking to forget or hide from your problems is bad.
Don't drink alone.
Don't drink more than 2-3 drinks per day.
Don't drink in the morning.
Don't get drunk more than once a week (it affects the liver).

when and if the problem ever arises, address it. don't shirk it away to be dealt with at a later time. but it is also a battle of willpower over addiction. only one will win in the long run so make sure its what you want

Don't drink.
Unfortunately, there are personality traits that can go along with it, even though you aren't drinking. Those may need addressing if they are creating a problem in your life.

if you don't want to become an alcoholic, then don't drink too much. Never get drunk or even tipsy.
