As a resident of Raleigh, I'm not usually a fan of most stories in the News and Observer, they're typically dumb-downed, and poorly written. But, I'm glad you shared this story and I actually to the time to read it. Men like the deceased in the story and his plattoon leader are the reason why this holiday is so important and people need to recognize the sacrifice that such brave men and women give to our country.

I couldn’t agree more with "Smoker06" but unfortunately our politicians will never view these kinds of tragedies as a means to use other methods and war as only a last resort. The story is truly sad but like many have said it is the grim reality of war. These are the types of things that happen whether it is a war against terrorists or another nation. This could be beneficial to an extent and for certain people but when you look at the big picture this article can be counterproductive. People’s first reaction to this is to get the troops out. This is horrific and no mother should ever have to face this again. But the reality is that this is what happens in war. It has been happening since the beginning of the first wars thousands of years ago and will remain to continue. This article puts a void in our troops and citizens back home. In a way it turns the American public against the military and views them negatively expecting troops to be withdrawn instantaneously. We were all ready to go to war the day of 9-11 and now that it’s taking its toll we want to just drop everything and forget about the problem. We sent our men there and g*d damn it we need to continue to support them until the last man is brought home! We have a serious separation issue within our “united” country and need to get back to basics. We must realize that safety and freedom are not given to you by other countries or the country you reside in, rather it’s something you must give a lot for and subsequently that means the lives of many brave and dedicated men. These guys do this for all you ignorant selfish ba*tards who take for granted your freedoms. Got off on a little tyrant but I think this article, yet informative and important to read, ultimately affects the military in a negative way. May God bless out troops and protect them during their tours abroad.

I don't think it's a terrible thing. I think this is an article that everyone should read. People need to know what war does to the lives of people back home. War deaths are not just statistics. They affect peoples lives, people that have nothing to do with the military. Reading articles like these might help people, especially politicians, that war is horrible and must only be used as the absolute last resort of influence, only after all diplomatic and economic courses of action have failed.

War is a grisly undertaking, but you cannot have freedom without defending it...even if that means fighting a war.
This article is in poor taste. That conversation should have remained between the mother and the sergeant. Only a left wing slanted media, and someone trying to make a leftist political agenda point would publish such a thing.
I support the war, and did my OWN fighting with the USMC.

It's a very poignant story. Maybe the paper is anti-war and has no problem putting a mother's grief on display to support their agenda. It doesn't seem different from anti-drunk-driving advertisements or stories about the victims of the Taliban or Saddam's henchmen.
Fortunately most adults don't make decisions based on the most recent sad newspaper article they read.

Everyone should be able to read about the terrible casualties of war, I support this war effort and understand the tragedy more than you ever will. Everyone must also read and understand this;
The United States of America was created by flag draped coffins and those who survived the wars; our veterans. Today our existence is assured by those who have the calling to serve and protect our country. These brave individuals are freely enlisting to make personal sacrifices for our country and freedom for all.
Our heroes that return home in a flag draped coffin would not want their memory and patriotism desecrated by anti-war protesters who obviously will never know the true feeling of comradeship, loyalty and patriotism; these are feelings that can never be truly defined. The best thing everyone can do to support our troops and the memories of those we lost is to help those who return home to us; our veterans.

that is really sad. I feel bad for both the family and the sgt. I couldnt get through the whole story.
You think that as time passes, so does pain. It does to an extent, but its still there.
Its reality, its truth.

Odd timing, but I think it is important to remember the reality of warfare. I just hate when things like this are used for political leverage.

i am sure the graphic details were not needed but what has this got to do with war supporters? i feel for her and will pray but in wars, lives are lost. not one military death has been anyone who was drafted though. i served for four years knowing what could happen. no one wants to have a single death but it is what it is. it does not affect my stance on the war.
