You are not allowed to mention religion in a hospital setting, I don't.

Well who knows all that a human body and the human spirit can do?

Tehabwa, exactly. A miracle isn't actual religious in context. A miracle can be in nature, the human body, and the human spirit. Science is still learning what the human body and brain can do. Thumbs up

Uh, you explained why: based on what happens to most people with the same condition in the same state, it was expected that they wouldn't get better; but they did.
It doesn't necessarily mean the doctor believes "god did it" as "It's a miracle" is an expression that is used by the irreligious, too.
It's unfortunate that doctors take their prognoses too seriously. For instance, "You've got yada time to live" -- if you look at actual cases, the times people survive the condition at that state varies. But docs tend to ignore all the variability and give an average number.
Some times people who "shouldn't" (in the sense that most don't) get better do get better. No one knows why this person did, and most don't.
Thus, they call it a "miracle" -- and some doc probably do believe in god. But not all do.

Figuratively speaking of course, the doctor was saying it was a near thing, a bit touch and go. Some people seem to need everything explained and spelled out for them...what's the matter with you?
To recap slightly differently the doctor might be saying considering this person is obese, drinks booze all day, chain smokes and eats only fries and little else it's a miracle he/she is alive...still it's just a figure of speech, It's astounding or it's a wonder he/she is still alive considering the garbage he/she ingests ...nothing religious implied.

Doctors realize that there is only so much medical intervention available to help a person recover. When all that has not been enough, yet the person recovers, the doctor realizes it was a power beyond and above that of medical expertise. Jesus is the Great Physician at work in our lives today.

There are times when despite all technology and education, the chances of someone surviving is slim at best. Miracles are usually events we can't explain, as though touched and blessed by God. Without any other way to explain how someone survived despite all odds being against them, with the grace of God, they stay alive.

It means that, statistically, they should have died. Strength of will and genetics are largely to thank, as well as advances in medical science.
It's also a way for doctors to get off the hook if they mess up along the line; they call it a miracle, and everyone ignores doctors' subsequent lack of skill.

Sometimes medical processes go better than expected. Doctors are always anticipating the worst, but sometimes the patient's recuperative processes succeed to a remarkable degree.

I don't really understand the generality of the question.
What one or two Doctors say in response to getting a prognosis wrong does not represent the entire profession.
