If you have an opinion on why specific wars included religious elements, please share.

To clarify my question,....

I am specifically asking if there is any war that did not include ANY elements of religious righteousness, any level of religious belief, any trace of religious based thought(s).

I'm also asking for people to share their thoughts on why religion played a role in various wars.

WAR CAUSED BY THE THEFT OF A BUCKET!

In the year 1006, some soldiers of the Commonwealth of Modena ran away with a bucket from a public well belonging to the State of Bologna. The bucket, which probably was not more than a shilling, produced a quarrel, which was worked up into a long and bloody war. Henry, the King of Sardinia, assisted the Modonese to keep possession of this bucket, and in one of the battles, he was made a prisoner. His father, the Emperor of Germany – Henry II, the Holy – offered a chain of gold that would encircle Bologna, which was seven miles in circuit, but in vain. After twenty-two years’ imprisonment, he pined away and died, and his monument can still be seen in the Church of the Dominicans. The fatal bucket, the cause of war, is still on exhibition in the Cathedral of Modena enclosed in an iron cage. Both, Bologna and Modena were incorporated into Italy in the year 1860.

As salaamu 'alaikym.

The American Revolutionary war.

The War of 1812.

The American Civil War.

The cultural revolution in China

The Veit Nam Policing actions (never declared a war)

The Korean War

to name a few.

Ma'a salaam.

Insha'Allah, I am certain that in every war ever fought, there has been some element of religious extremism which would have been evident in the revolution, the Civli war, both world wars and in every war fought since Russia became an communist nation (ie., kill a commie for christ, etc) as political leaders will use any and every avenue at their disposal to encourage the all too willing cannon fodder to line up with their body bags while seeking national glory. Be that as it may be, the issue of religion is usually merely a ploy by the obvioulsy non-religious (as evidenced by their practice or lack there of of the same).

Sadly, religion is often espoused a reason for most crimes of hate and crimes against humanity (ie. to either promote religion and keep it pure or to decry religion and attempt to stop the same.)

Insha'Allah, the truly religious, regardless of their faith are those who will fight another only in self defense or in defense of another.

Ma'a salaam

Most wars weren't fought over religion. Without taking into account the vast bulk of historic wars, let's just look at the most prominent American wars:

Revolutionary War: fought for independence from England, spurred by political inequalities and taxes

Civil War: fought for "states rights" (slavery) and keeping the country from separating due to political differences

WWI: fought for land control in Europe
WWII: ditto

Korea, Vietnam: To contain the political influence of the Soviet Union.

Gulf Wars: Oil, money, political and economic influence.

I am always intrigued when people make the claim that "all wars" or even "most wars" were caused by religion. History just doesn't support that claim. At all.
