...Freedom Fries taking the place of French Fries...and Freedom Toast taking the place of French Toast. (It's all the same..different name to snub the French.) It's always brought up when US citizens are upset with the French. Last time we used the phrase(s) was in 2003...

I disremember why but some time ago the Americans were upset with the French so they started called French fries, freedom fries and instead of the expression ''pardon my French' they'd say 'pardon my .....(whatever country you want to put in there)'
Freedom fries = French fries
I think your parents are putting one over on you!

" Freedom fries " was a short-lived name used by some in the United States for French fries, as a result of anti-French sentiment in the United States.

Freedom Fries are the same thing as french fries. Right after 9/11 and extremely strained US and France relations, a number of regular food names were "temporarily changed," etc... Instead of calling them french fries, people called them freedom fries.

When France not too long ago, went against the USA, we decided to change the name of FRENCH FRIES to FREEDOM FRIES....other things we did was to pour French wines down the gutter, boycott French made products etc.
The French was not happy about that, and thus became our ally again.

there was no difference between freedom fries and french fries, just the name. The idea was that since france was not helping the united states in the 'war on terror' we could change the name. They said they didnt care whatsoever, hence it was an extremly silly thing to do.
