I am currently in a musical at school when my director threaten to kick me out if I did not come to a rehersal on a Wednesday night after school that conflicts with the time of my church. Since my father is a pastor it in unavoidable for me to be there. I believe my teacher should not be able to kick me out just because I am going to church since that is a violation of my religion, and accourding to the 1st amendment we have freedom of religion. More closely I am looking at the Free Exercise Clause which prohibts the goverment from interfering with a person's practice of his or her religon. Since the school is a government run facility shouldn't this law apply to them too? Do you think it is far to a school to say this to a child. Please help me with this dilima.

A Very Sad,

They can not do that to you. Have your father go to them...he will get it taken care of for good.

I was in musicals in high school as well, and had similar problems. My director threatened to kick anybody out of the cast that didn't come to every rehearsal. I was always terrified to miss rehearsal (which was, I think, the point of the threat) though on the few occasions when somebody actually did miss, they were never actually removed.

Directors need for everybody to be at rehearsals, or they can't practice the scenes properly. However, they are also aware that people occasionally have circumstances that require them to be elsewhere. I can see that you have gone to considerable effort to research the topic. If you take that same intensity to your director and explain the situation to him/her you wil be allowed to miss rehearsal. If that doesn't work, you can take the issue to the principal - though I seriously doubt that will be necessary. Rules like this are created to keep slacker kids from skipping rehearsal just because they didn't feel like going, not to restrict people like yourself who have a prior commitment.

Stella, if you're not willing to be kicked out of the musical so that you can be at church, then perhaps you need to be rethinking your commitments here.

I agree that the school director should not kick you out of the play for missing one night of rehearsal because of a prior commitment (i.e., church), but if that's what happens, you should just shrug it off and be glad that you at least have your priorities in order.

I come from a drama background myself. One cast member missing one rehearsal should not ruin a production. What if you'd been sick? Or what if you'd had laryngitis and couldn't speak at all for that one rehearsal -- would he think the whole production was so much at risk, he'd kick you out? Probably not.

Which makes me think there is something more going on here. Perhaps he is having trouble getting ALL the students to take rehearsals seriously enough? Or perhaps he is looking for a reason to get rid of you specifically and promote the understudy?

It's totally okay to try to find out exactly what is going on, but like I said, if you wind up booted out of the production because of your religion, it shouldn't bother you all that much.

Good counsel. Go to church. The teacher cannot legally give you that ultimatum. I would also be sure you respectfully communicate to the teacher that you are not doing this to be disrespectful to him/her or because you are not committed to the musical. The teacher should respect your decision. Most schools in our area do not put school commitments on Wednesday nights because they know there is a conflict in times with church services.

The LCMS will enable them to function Deaconesses and DCOs, yet not as ordained ministers.

Maybe you should have thought of your prior commitments before taking something else on that would conflict with them. Everyone else in the musical is working very hard and probably sacrificing some of their stuff to do a good job. Why should exceptions be made for you? Yes, your religion is your right. Being in the musical is not, however.

Jesus always said that there are consequences to following Him. While you may have legal recourse, it may also be that you are being tested by God in this - to see what (or Whom) is truly important to you.

God is sovereign. I would pray to seek His will in this, and then let the chips fall where they may. In the meantime, I would also suggest that you look into your legal rights at any of the following websites:

They should not have the right. I would do the right thing and go to church. God will honour that and if it is the right thing for you to do in being in the musical then he will change what your teacher is saying, there is a saying in the BIBLE not sure where it is but says honour God and he will honour you.
