Among John’s visions recorded in the book of Revelation appear pronouncements of judgment against “Babylon the Great,” as well as a description of her and of her downfall.—Re 14:8; 16:19; chaps 17, 18; 19:1-3.
Babylon the Great is the World Empire of False Religion.
Soon this will happen... There will be a turn on ALL religion. Then they will see that true worshipers are still worshiping God, and then they will turn their attention to the true worshipers because they will have banned religion. They will see that they can not stop true worshipers, they continue regardless of the ban on religion. This is when Jehovah steps in and Armageddon starts.

Good question.
The original Babylon was of course in southern Iraq where it is today. I have been there.
It was there that the Tower of Babel (one world religion based on occultism) was practiced.
The Unholy family of Nimrod, Semeramis and Tammuz came from it.
It is as a previous correspondent has said, a term for all world religion - all system religion. Roman Catholicism is singled out for the Seven Hills (Rome was built on seven hills) and Roman Catholicism is about as far removed from the religion of Jesus in the way He lived as you can find. However I cannot accept that no Catholics are saved nor can I accept that the office of the Pope is the office of the Antichrist. See suggested reading - Babylon Mystery Religion -
Babylon Mystery Religion
Many of today’s religious customs come from ancient Babylon. This series of articles and books gives much information on this important subject.
The Two Babylons, by Alexander Hislop.
“All Roads Lead to Babylon,” Study 185, by Richard C. Nickels. Review of the book, Babylon Mystery Religion, by Ralph Woodrow.
“Satan’s Great Deception,” by Dr. C. Paul Meredith.
“The Race Change in Ancient Italy! 300 B.C. and 300 A.D.” by Ernest L. Martin.
Paganism Surviving in Christianity, by Abram Herbert Lewis. PDF Version
Many ancient Babylonish customs have been adapted by the Catholic Church and made to seem “Christian.” Here is some material about the Roman Catholic Church:
“Simon Magus,” by Ernest L. Martin, 25-page reprint, suggested donation, $3.
“A City on Seven Hills,” by Dave Hunt, Study 150.
The Priest, the Woman, and the Confessional, by Charles Chiniquy, former Catholic priest.

The catholic church is not Babylon the great.
In Revelation we see the "Mystery" sitting on the wild beast. She has been sitting on it since the first head or kingdom which is Egypt.
Since the Catholic church only came into existence after Jesus died it has not been around long enough to be on the wild beast (or nations).
Thus the Mystery Babylon is the world wide empire of false religion that has been in existence since the first world empire. The pagan teachings of the trinity, hell, immortal soul all comes from her.

This scripture helps to identify the catholic church as Babylon the Great.
Everything in the catholic church is a mystery (mystery of the ascension, mystery of the rosary, mystery of the visitation, etc.)
The great harlot refers to the fact that this church prays to countless dead people and mary, but not to Christ. Praying to anyone but God is considered adultery and prostitution, and no one does that more than the catholic church.

Ancient Babylon was a melting pot of all kinds of people.
Guess what country is a big melting pot of all kinds of people.
Why was it a mystery? Because it didnt exist when that was written.

Revelation 17:1-9 to me clearly speaks of the Roman Catholic church. Rome is on seven hills.
