Shih Tzus are the most social breed of dog. All three of the ones I've had hate to be alone. If yours is hiding, could there be something medically wrong? As far as "laying around" goes, shih tzus are awfully "comfy" little dogs. They like being lazy. Especially once they are full grown. The only time any of mine became anti social was when she had an abscessed tooth. Make a vet appointment just in case.

Well, part of the reason she's moody is because she's an intact *****. Spayed girls don't have all those raging hormones to contend with, and are less prone to mood swings, IMO. Also, as someone else mentioned, vet's have finally clued in that spaying at around 6 months is not in fact the best thing. When the hormones are removed that early it slows the closing of the growth plates, which means that the dogs grow bigger then they should. Spaying her at 2 is actually a very good time; late enough to avoid the growth issues, early enough to prevent cancers that intact bitches are prone to. Plus, it's a pain when they go through heat cycles twice a year. Not just the mess, but you would be surprised at how cunning males and females can be. Even the most diligent people can end up with an oopsie litter.

Has anyone been roughing your dog up lately. Maybe a boyfriend or someone when you're not around? Dogs that have been abused tend to act that way. Also I would also take the dog in for an evaluation too. It's probably about time for the two years check up anyway. Ask the Dr. about it. Dog's will go off somewhere alone when they're very sick or dying too! I'm not trying to be morbid or anything but I'm just giving you some tips on it. Just a few things you can do to see if he/she will perk up. I hope I was of some help.

It might be time for a trip to the vet. If nothing medical is causing this change in behavior, it's probably that he's matured and settling down.
I call Shih Tzus "fuzzy pancakes" -- they're such floppers. Love them !

Has there been a change in the household like a new person or pet?
Could there be something that happened that you don't know about (abuse my someone in the house or a neighbor)?
Is the dog eating and drinking normally?
If the answer to all of the above is "no" I suggest a vet visit just to check things out.

The main things to look for in a sick dog are is he eating and drinking, lethargic, vomiting or diahrea. If he is any of these, you might need to contact your vet. A lot of times when an animal is in pain, they will hide to be left alone. I would monitor his food to see if he's actaully eating and go from there.
There could also be outside stimuli causing the problem like a change in his/your life. If you've brought another animal in or moved.
