Because we are so full of guilt in everything we do?

Some of the answers I'm reading are addressing this as if I was making a statement. This is a question. Not necissarily my point of view. I am ASKING because I am pondering the question and would like some other peoples input. Thanks.

I'd say catholics suffer from more shame concerning sex than other religions.

...I think most people believe in what they honestly wanna believe in...not what they don't....and if you were brought up in a highly religious realm of Catholicism?......you absolutely were taught the inherent conditions of "shame" and "guilt" and "self blame" and significantly poor altered mental outcomes. I believe religion is the Prime evil that confronts most if not all of what I term "mental conflictions" within society today otherwise. Heck???.....just simply look at what the Israelis and the Palestinians have going on with each other inherently.
Geezez!!!!!.....They've been conflicting with one another for over 5000 years seriously....YIKES!!!

I think guilt is an issue in Christianity in general. Here are a few verses that come to mind.

Romans 3:23: "For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;"

I John 1:10: "If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us."

Matthew 5:20: "For I say unto you, That except your righteousness shall exceed the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, ye shall in no case enter into the kingdom of heaven.

Matthew 5:28: "But I say unto you, That whosoever looketh on a woman to lust after her hath committed adultery with her already in his heart."

James 2:10: "For whosoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all."

u know it's interesting that you're pondering this question... because i was raised catholic and i have clinical depression. i think catholicism is about 90% bs (no offense) and i hated it so much that I became a nihilist when i was 13.

so i do think that there is some connection between catholicism and depression.

I think that is an over- generalization. Depression can happen to anyone. I don't have stats to back that up, but do you have stats saying that Catholics are more depression than other religions or those who don't believe in a God, or other higher being??

I'm not entirely sure. However, the suicide rate in traditionally Catholic countries is lower than in traditionally Protestant countries, because Catholicism is so explicitly anti-suicide.

It would make sense, but I don't think it's true. Catholicism is rather depressing if you really think about it. However most people don't think much.

IDK but it seems that if you're feeling guilty about something, maybe you should just listen to that little voice inside you. That might solve your problems.
I'm not sure your religion leads to depression, but if it makes you feel better to think so, whatever floats your boat...
