is all about setting the focus and the shutter speed been awhile but that is the jist of it

You cannot black out the background using a Coolpix S6 or any other camera. All you can do is to used the widest possible aperture and blur it so far as possible (not always easy with a digital camera). The only way to completely black out the background is in a image manipulation program like Photoshop
