Are we supposed to kill or not? Was God ignorant? What did He know that we just haven't learned yet?

i don't think anyone should kill period. i'm 100% against violence and war. if a person walked up to me and punched me in the face. i would turn the other cheek. believe me, it's happened and my reaction was to grab my hurt nose and walk away.

we should not kill for any purpose ever. that is what he knows. we should love and learn to turn the other cheek. i mean, what did jesus do? did he ask his friends to kill the men who beat him and put him on his cross. or did he tur the other cheek and say 'father forgive them for they know not what they do."

***edit:
mur·der NOUN: The unlawful killing of one human by another
killed , kill·ing , kills VERB: To put to death.
To deprive of life

i don't know. what's the difference? if you go to court and say no judge i didn't murder him, i killed him do you think your sentence will be change.

Thou shalt not kill actually means murder. ie don't go up to your neighbor or to another country and murder someone. It doesn't mean no capital punishment, it doesn't end all wars, it means YOU the individual are not to put a person to death. Yeah, I love living here in Kuwait and all my hippie fellow Americans singing the song of "let's leave Iraq, b/c there were no weapons of mass destruction and Iraq will be better without us." I didn't support the invasion from day one, but I do believe in cleaning up my own mess, and helping others in need. And if we would simply pull out of Iraq right now, the insurgents will take over, kill thousands of innocent people and life would be just as horrible for the "other" religious group as it was under Saddam. But you can understand the issue with Iran. That's good... because I'm way more worried about living within missile striking distance from Iran than I am from Iraq... What ever happened to helping those who cannot help themselves and helping others before yourself?

Murder -- thou shalt not murder. Even God led his people into war; but they were righteous wars led by a righteous God that would bring praise to Him. As for us, we are in the last days and have been for over 2000 years. Our country forefathers founded this nation based on a righteous God and when we have gone to war (let us not discuss the Indian War which was nothing but genocide and the country at the time was led by men that were more interested in expansion than whether or not Native Americans were worthy of living) routinely it has been for a just cause. Ecclesiastes tells us there is a time for peace and a time for war. It isn't pretty, but we are doomed with this fate until God decides he has had enough and get the show on the road.

We stand teary eyed because of the loss of life.

Would you rather us cheer?

War being wrong or right is not the issue - the loss of a brother, sister, mother, father, son, or daughter is never a moment to celebrate but to mourn the loss, honor their memory and their contributions to society.

The commandment passed through many language interpretations . I'm sure it did not mean killing under all circumstances . There has always been wars , and executions of criminals . The translation probably should have been " Thou shalt not murder " .

So are you saying that all wars are God's doing? That we are in Iraq because of God and not because of greed for the oil that is there? Or a Presidents determination to revenge the planned but failed attempt to assassinate his father? Or that only Christians are fighting and dieing there and only Christian families are morning the death of their young soldiers? Your bias and sick distortions of the Bible is appalling.

You and I aren't supposed to go around killing folks. Unfortunately, God wasn't specific and as long as you and I are at war the killing can be justified or rationalized. It should have read "Thou shalt not kill or go to war". Sad that it doesn't or that we haven't the brass to update that particular commandment. Typical of religious rules to be vague and subject to interpretation.

Hey, don't worry... as far as killing goes... Jesus is in charge of taking up after his father in the Old Testament days... He is killing even children, today... so the churches will learn... that's the only way Christians can learn!!!!

Revelation 2:23 niv
I (Jesus) WILL STRIKE HER CHILDREN DEAD. Then all the churches will know that I am he who searches hearts and minds, and I will repay each of you according to your deeds

Because the passage actually say - thou shalt not murder - which is killing without official sanction. Which is why god could have his people commit genocide since it was officially sanctioned.

as far as I know the correct translation is: you must not murder. Killing with a cause is perfectly OK with god as evidenced by the old testament. At least god did his share of smiting and killing. Also the old testament is pretty fuzzy what a just cause is.
