This question makes absolutely no sence. Are you asking us how many years Americans have believed that there were times you had to fight to protect the nation? Then 231.

Are you asking us how many years we have been involved in wars that the majority of American people felt were 'necessary and right'? Then probably about 221 (subtract the last 6 years of Vietnam and the last 4 years of the current war in Iraq).

As little as a hundred years ago, countries all over the world honored military heros as godlike. Napoleon, Hannibal, Genghis Khan, Pavlos Melas, Saladin, etc. were all cherished by their own people. War was considered an art and a necessity. Nowadays, the mere mention of war sets off alarms, and you are considered a heartless, mindless fool. Interesting how quickly people forget history and begin to generalize.

In other words, nations and empires throughout the world have believed that war is both necessary and right for thousands of years. Trying to single out America to prove a moot point is just showing how ignorant you are.

THE CORRECT ANSWER IS 230 YEARS - not THE 231 AS PREVIOUSLY MENTIONED.

The year not mentioned is the year when Clinton was poking Monica. At this time he was NOT at all sure what was right and necessary. In fact it has been said.......... he did not know if he was coming or going.

The Oval Office, gathered Round and tried to Square the issue - to no avail. In fact it has been rumoured that Clinton preferred his Pal to his Lassie.

Great debate still persists in The Shite House.

The cause of freedom dictates that a staunch and determined stand must be led against tyranny by those who believe in the rights of all to enjoy life. Every war has its casualties, and even those said to be without cause or unjust still have their heroes. But since this country's foundations, while there have been setbacks, there have also been triumphs, resulting in our liberties today. No where else on Earth is there even the hope that tommorow will be a brighter day. So I believe that makes every war neccessary and right. The bravery of those who served-and the freedom they preserved by doing so demands that they were.

With six exceptions, I'd say its only been about 30 years of our history.

War of 1812 (we were invaded)
1898, the Spanish American War (William Randolph Hearst put America into a feeding frenzy)
WWI (the Germans did some stupid things that finally got us into the war)
WWII (Pearl Harbor)
Vietnam (gulf of tonkin. Neither necessary or right, especially considering our governments manipulation of their election which would have united the country)
Post 911 (neither necessary or right)

By putting necessary and right together, your making a point that American does not have a right in some of our wars.

The American people have been amazingly isolationists when it comes to war and it is only when pushed is when we go into a war. The 911 terrorists knew that and is one of the reasons they made damned sure they would pick a target that would get that reaction.

If you are talking about all the other little wars or the ones of annihilation of a people, such as the American Indians, then you could say that we have been at war for 231 years in various forms and reasons, whether it be right or wrong.

Peace
