I would say, with personal experience, it would be the Boxer breed!! They are the best family dog, and very, very protective of children!! You will find that they are very smart too!! Good Luck with your new addition to your family!!

I can tell you the best breed to NOT have around kids...a Jack Russell. We just got a Jack Russell puppy the other day, and they are way too hyper and they nip and they are VERY messy. *sigh* What have I gotten myself into...she's digging up the carpet, and shredding her toys to bits...
She tried to bite at my neice who is almost 2, and I had to lock the puppy in the bathroom while she was here.

I love pugs...they don't bite or anything, there's just the problem of them wanting to jump on you. Some pugs could knock down a small child, but they are really loveable dogs.
Golden Retrievers and Labs are wonderful too!

You need to research a lot more than breed to have a dog around your kids.

Your best option, if you are looking for a dog, is to visit a nearby shelter (or check out www.petfinder.com). Shelters are experienced in finding dogs that will fit an individual lifestyle.

Remember, it isn't always the dog that is bad around the kids, but also that kids that are bad around the dog!

Sorry to all the people who think golden retriever or boxer but they both have a ton of energy and may be a little to rambunctious for little kids. (especially boxers. I had two and they have like 5 tonnes of energy)

So i would say a lab, doberman, pit bull, or even a rotti if you train them right and socialize them correctly. Or any large dog because small dogs could be injured by little kids.

Golden Retriever, Labrador Retriever, Newfoundland, Saint Bernard, Great Dane, Bernese Mountain Dog, Boxer, Rottweiler, German Shepherd.

A large breed is preferred to a smaller one, small dogs tend to be hyper, nervous, and nippy, and could also be injured by the child on accident.

All dogs are great, no matter the breed. If you are looking to get a dog, take one of the many surveys online and find out which one best fits you personally.

Well, I think that Shelties are a great choice because they are very loyal to their family and are great with kids. They are really shy sometimes and will not run up to greet other people outside of the family until they come to get to know them well. Shelties are a breed that likes to bark, so if you want a quieter breed Shelties might not be for you. They are also a relatively small breed, some bigger then the others. Shelties are also very patient with kids, they could pull the dog's tail and he/she would be ok till it really starts to annoy them.
