Because they do not read the Bible.
Wonder why the popes say they follow after Peter.....
EDIT: James O, I am hearing first of married priests (ingood standing) in the catholic Church. Ever heard of Archbishop Milingo of Zambia? He got himself a Korean wife and you should have seen how much dust was raised in Rome!!!

From Mark 1:30, you could suggest that Peter's wife may have died before he became a disciple.
However, in 1 Corinthians 9, the apostle Paul who new Peter well, refers to Peter taking his wife with him on his journeys as an apostle.
So there is no biblical justification for claiming that Peter was celibate.

I don't know any Catholic scholar who claims that Peter was celibate.
His daughter Petronella has a church in Rome.
All the Apostles were married except John.
Marriage is holy but so is celibacy(Matt 19:22) Many of the Early Popes were married and the Catholic Church still has married priests and deacons

You can't rewrite history, even biblical "history", to fit what you see today.
James O is right. Plenty of popes had wives, mistresses and passels of legitimate and illegitimate kids.
