I just got a new kitten and I can't tell if it has a lot of ear wax or mites

I am taking him to the vet next week but I don't want to introduce him to my cat yet if he does have mites

sorry I left out a small detail of not wanting to introduce the new kitten to my other cat! This is my second one and I don't want to give my other cat the mites

A couple of issues I see right away...you recently got a new kitten - great but, where did this kitten come from? A stray, the shelter, a friend? It would be VERY important to know if this kitten has been exposed to ANYTHING that it could pass on to your other kitty. Until your "new" kitten has been properly tested, vaccinated and generally been deemed healthy -- I would not expose the kitten to your cat nor the cat to your kitten. Either way it could be bad. Another thing the two cats should be kept apart initially anyway so that they learn the smell of the other and slowly introduce themselves. Just plopping the new kitten down in the livingroom and thinking your other cat will just love it is not reality. There will be hissing and spitting and all sorts of posturing. Slow is best for introductions.

About the mites - yes, it is mostly likely mites in a kitten's ears as a rule. However, to be absolutely sure you need a microscope! Mites can not be seen without one. I would not suggest treating to be safe because then you are exposing this new kitten to medicine it does not need for mites it does not have.

A new kitten or puppy appointment is ALWAYS a special need appointment at a vet clinic. They should always schedule them quickly so that if the new pet is sick - treatment can be started and if the new pet is healthy - they can be brought into the household with piece of mind.

Everything hinges on that first vet appointment! Please do not expose either cat to each other until after that appointment.

Good Luck with your newest addition.

Ok, lots of animals get ear mites there is no reason not to let the vet see the ears. Plus any medication you get from the vet is much better than anything you would buy OTC

Usually cats won't have copious amounts of ear wax,. If the ears are filled with what looks like ear wax it's probably ear mites.

Ear wax is the color of dirty dishwater with maybe a russet tinge toward the edges, but ear mites are a dark russet color. Moisten a Q-Tip in baby oil, then blot so it is not drenched with oil, and go into the ear and swab. Pull it out and look at it. If it is waxy and somewhat translucent and just plain looks like something that evolved as a bodily secretion meant to trap dirt that enters the ear, it's ear wax. If on the other hand, it is a definite opaque russet or dark brown, it's ear mites. And if the kitten stops play from time to time to shake her head, or if she scratches at her ears, it is almost certainly ear mites.

If it is ear mites, you can give her some relief by cleaning her ears daily with Q-Tips moistened with baby oil and blotted. Keep cleaning until the Q-Tips come out clean.

Knowing kittens have a tendency to have mites it is most likely the problem, which IS easy to treat(Revolution Plus kills fleas, ticks AND ear mites...just check for age/size usage). Wax is brownish and oily, mites can get bad enough to look like coffee grounds. Your kitten probably still has to complete the shots and be fixed, you can have the mites taken care of on your next visit, until then just clean the ears with an OTC mite treament per directions.(Oto-mite is decent.)

If he is constantly shaking or scratching at his ears and the wax looks dark and blood tinged then you probably have an earmite problem. But that does not rule out that is could be a yeast build up in the ear instead mites.

actually rub her ears...especially the one she is scratching....if she cries they are biting her..they can get ear mites while being an indoor cat...what you can do to treat her that will not harm her is one part vinegar to two parts water..drop some into her ears keep her ear closed and rub it around..whatever it is it will go away...my older cat had some gunk in her ears after we got our newer kitten from the pound..it was mites..we did the dr prescribed meds and the over the counter it didnt work..we did the vinegar water combo suggested by a vet tech friend..it was gone in three days...

Ear wax looks like ear wax, mites look like sand.
