It isn't exactly hard to kill oneself, is it? Why would anyone attempt and not succeed?

I'm not judging anyone. I was just wondering.

Unless you're permanently disabled, you didn't really try. I once met a man who shot himself in the head and lived, but he was blinded.

Suicide attempts or successes fall into three basic categories. One are the attention seekers who do something that will kill them if no one intervenes, those who are actually ready to die and do so quickly and decisively and then there is a third catagory. The third group are often mistaken for something else such as accident victims.

These are usually people under some kind of powerful stress. Rather than deliberately kill themselves they behave with total reckless abandon as if they don't care if they live or die. Often these people are found dead in single car fatal accidents where they were driving way too fast for the conditions or something like that. Often they do so on the spur of the moment withour planning or notes.

Regardless of the methodology, all attempts at suicide should be taken very seriously. Even people who just want attention are certainly operating outside the usual attention getting norm. They may inadvertantly succeed and if so they are just as dead as those who do so intentionally.

Note: The truly suicidal will usually be sufferers of long and powerful depression. Often for years. Sometimes, just before killing themselves, they will suddenly seem to get better. People who know them may find that they appear to have just snapped out of the depression and are actually now happy and content. Often, this is because they have arrived at the decision to end their lives and that certainty that the suffering is soon to be over, that a solution has finally been found will make them act this way.

Such people rarly fail to end their lives. They do so in a deliberative way so as to insure success.

By definition, you are not in your right mind. Your powers of reasoning are diminished, often because of severe depression, pain (whether emptional or physical, which can be essentially the same thing).

Occasionally it doesnt work because there are so many things that can go wrong and it is such un-familiar territory. (it's not usual practice to kill anything, let alone a human)

Often the feeling of not caring anymore adds to the fact of planning the eventual deed is difficult (not always though, some people are maticulous in planning), the will to survive is also an overriding factor. Occasionally it is a cry for help, even though it might not feel like that at the time.

Hmm I don't know.
When I was a kid I made a "suicide kit" for an art project because I did not get it either. Despite the hard work and research I put into it I got an "F"

My uncle shot himself in the head and lived..so I guess things could happen that way. My dad on the other hand told him he should sue Smith and Wesson for a faulty gun. That's brotherly love now isn't it.

Because you feel it's the only way out of the pain and chaos in your mind and in your life. It's not that you want to die, its that you want it to stop.
Many males are VERY successful at suicide. They tend to use guns, stand in front of trains, drive cars off cliffs and jump off bridges. Women are more likely to attempt suicide, but also tend to attempt it in ways that can be intervened such as over doses and slit wrists. So it's not they didn't give it a good go. It's that they didn't go fast enough.

Lost nerve at a critical moment, rescuers arrive after incapacitation but before death, one's aim is off, etc.

However, most suicides that are not successful are later reported by the patient to not have been serious attempts, but rather intentionally failed to be used as cries for help.

Those patients who show clear patterns of genuine desire to die do so with alarming success rates.

Well let's say you're a kid (12 - 14) and no knowledge of the veins on the human body, you cut yourself in the wrist assuming you'll bleed to death but since you missed any arterial veins you'll just have "some cuts".

It's true that it is a call for help, unless you're a goth type. Then you're just ridiculing yourself.

Many people who attempt suicide don't actually want to die. They feel unwanted and think that no one will care until they're gone.

But since they don't want to die, they do something that won't actually kill them. For example, instead of shooting themselves in the head, they slit their wrists while someone is in the next room and then they go to the hospital really quickly.

Attempted suicide is more common with women.

They tend to do the slitting the wrists type stuff. Many do it wrong just to bleed a lot and call 911 for attention.

Men are much more likely to do it successfully with a shot to the head.

Failure generally means you didnt really want to do it in the first place.

Are you inside my head?? I was just thinking about this last night. My dad's best friend and his wife have been on again off again and finally went to a lawyer 2 weeks ago to draw up separation papers. I heard through the neighborhood grapevine and dad confirmed it with his friend that his friend's wife went to a guy's house in our neighborhood, the guy slipped something in the friend's wife's drink and raped her. (My question was what was she doing over at another man's house when her and her husband have still been hanging out together still?)
She now has slit her wrists and wrote I want to die in red paint all over her house because she wants to commit suicide. It seems to me there is something fake about it all.....

What if there is no afterlife?

Imagine you are about to successfully kill yourself because you can't stand this life. Right before dropping the chair, you most likely have to think about what is next. Many kids think that there will be heaven waiting for them, a better place, and this convinces them to succeed and count on the mercy of God. But others are either afraid of hell or afraid that this is it.

Its a terrible thing to deal with.
