I was told that doing something you knew would kill you is the same as killing yourself, and that there is no such thing as self-sacrifice.
I was told that by a church elder, but I don't think they realized the following.
Jesus knew they'd kill him, and he did it anyway, so isn't that suicide? And isn't that a sin?

I realize the difference between sacrifice and suicide. I was told though that God valued life above all else and that he saw anything that would kill you as suicide, even if you died to save someone else.

Dear,
I think your question is quite "drastic".
Never any Prophet of God Commit Suicide.
Bear in Mind JESUS is one of the most Right PROPHET of God. One of the Five highest Grades of Prophets (Rasullullah Ulul Ambia). They are Abraham, Moses, David, Jesus and Muhammad. God is As-Salam. He, who protects his creation from danger and obstruction. God is Al-Mu'min. He, who places faith in the heart of His servants, protects those who seek refuge with Him, and gives tranquillity. He, who watches over and protects all things. He, who shows His greatness in all things and in all ways. He, who creates everything from nothing and creates all things with the knowledge of what will happen to them.
Prophet Jesus came to this world without a father. Prophet Jesus is extra ordinary. Jesus been given Scriptures the Bible and brought Christianity!. Jesus is one of the right Most Prophet of God.
Jesus Never "COMMIT SUICIDE".
The plain truth in Al-Qur'an, Jesus did not die. The Yahudi look for Jesus. A Hawari came to the Yahudi searching group and said "What will you give me if I show you Jesus Place?". The Yahudi group gave him 30 Dirham. At the same time God change "the Hawari" look exactly like Jesus. The Yahudi group straight away caught "the Hawari" and chain him. They throw thorn to "the Hawari". The Yahudi group thought "the Hawari" is Jesus. They said to "the Hawari", "You have alive the death, chase away the evil and cure the mad person". Now that you're chained and you can't do anythings. They brought "the Hawari" to the cross and nailed him at the cross.
I have to beg your pardon. It not right for me to answers for the Christian. BUT, as a MUSLIM, Jesus is also one of our prophet and we are to honor Jesus. My Prophet is prophet Muhammad bin Abdullah s.a.w.
Since you accuse Jesus for Suicide I come forward to answer. 'Suicide' is a dirty deeds in my religion ISLAM.
Paulas is the head in against Jesus. Paulas want to kill Jesus. Paulas hate Jesus and his teaching.
The man on the Cross is "YUDAS ISKARIOT". He look exactly like Jesus. God make "the Hawari" look exactly like Jesus. God has taken Jesus away. Jesus at that time age 33 years. Where does "Yudas Iskariot" "the Hawari" during that time. He does not Exist.
According to my prophet in the book "Al-Malaam" and in our Al-Qur'an Surah (verse) an-Nisa that Jesus will be existing again to earth 40 years before end of the world. This are according to Hisyam bin Urwah tells from Soleh Maula Abu Hurairah from Abu Hurairah r.a. that Prophet Muhammad s.a.w. said "He (ISA-Jesus) will stay on earth for 40 years". The exist of Jesus during that time is the true sign of the world end.

And just why did Jesus have to die for our sins?
So, God comes down, gets Mary pregnant, causing the death of all children under 1, which being omnipotent he must have known would happen. He has his son wander around Judea, a backwater of the world of the time, performing dozens of miracles and proofs of God's power, only to have his son nailed to a cross and dies in a rather unpleasant fashion.
Why go through all this song and dance? Why not just appear to all the people around the world and clearly spell it all out? If he is willing to remove the option of free choice for all the people Jesus cured and resurrected, and all those who witnessed his miracles, why not do it for everyone?
Or is Jesus just a slap together of Mithra, Moses, and Abraham's son cobbled onto some forgotten Jewish revolutionary with some biblical prophecies thrown in?

That church elder is stupid. Pardon me, but I really think so.
In war situations, a hand-grenade falls in a crowded area. A soldier lays down on top of it to prevent others from being killed. That is self-sacrifice. Anyone who thinks otherwise is ignorant and foolish.
Jesus, according to the Bible, did this same sort of act.
Your church Elder does not know what he or she is talking about. They have likely not served in the military. They don't understand what honor people will rise to when necessary.
Even Jesus said "There is no greater love than to lay down one's life for another" (Jn. 15:13).

A great example of why you shouldn't believe everything you hear from a church elder (or any other person).
I'd certainly hope that if that elder saw his beloved little boy standing in the street with a truck barrelling down on him, he would throw himself into the path of that truck to save his child...if not, then he is missing the basic point about what it means to love. There is a HUGE difference between sacrificing yourself to save another person and killing yourself for your own selfish reasons...the first reflects the love of Jesus, the second is the most self-centered, unloving thing a person can do to him/herself!

I don't think Jesus committed suicide because first, it's the will of God. Second, He didn't hurt himself because it's the Romans who did it. Last, He did that because He wants to save us from our sins and above all, He loves us!
I'm a Catholic by the way. I mean that's a great question that I've seen! :-)

No, he didn't commit suicide. He was murdered by self-righteous Jews. Why would you take the word of a church elder for what you know to be true in your heart? Jesus did not sin.

The church elder is wrong; of course there is such a thing as self-sacrifice.
Millions of people would be willing to die for others, that's not suicide.

No, if someone runs in front of a bus to save a child, it is sacrifice not suicide. Suicide is a selfish act done only to help ones self. Don't you see the difference?

Hmmm, good question. I'm a Christian and I have never heard that question before.
I would have to say that even though Jesus knew he would die, he also knew it was God's will....so I don't think it would necessarily be viewed as a sin. He obviously wasn't excited about the whole situation or anything...so if he had another option that God gave him he may have taken it!
Good question though...I LIKE IT!
