Today I added adventure to my plein air painting. I rode my bike with my pochade box 3 kilometres past the closed state park gate. I was truly alone with a rabbit and all kinds of birds. I painted the lake in front of me and the mountains on the other side. I would go back to finish the piece tomorrow bur there's snow in the forecast so I will finish it in the comfort of my studio.

Since I have retired, my inspirations for painting have dwindled a little bit I must admit. Lately I have been involved in a couple of projects for some church and community projects.
Back in the winter, my wife was stricken with cancer and was very ill. She had to take chemo and this is not an easy task for anyone. But to help my days go a little better, I took on a project to assist this lady in making a quilt that is now on display at a local museum. All I did was do the designs for the quilt blocks and they had to be related to the state in which I live. Easy enough, and I was glad to help out.
After the wife had recovered and returned to work, I took on a project to paint gourds for some church ladies to sell at the church bizarre. They birdhouses were a big hit. It seems that I have become a little addicted to painting the gourds. The bizarre is over, but I continue to paint gourds. I strive to make each one a little better than the last.
You see, my theory has always been that the whole world is a canvas, and if you truly love art, it matters little on what your works are rendered. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder without a doubt.
Maybe one day soon, I will go back to the canvas, or the watercolor paper, or maybe even do some serious pencil drawings once again. But for right now, I am into gourds....God bless you and yours.....Nomadic

I know most of the anwers are about materials. Canvas which is usually made of cotton or linen. Linen has the greatest longevity. Either is primed with gesso, a special white paint to prepare the surface for the paint. But I thought the asker was enquiring about subject matter. Such as clowns, flowers, grandma, sinking ships, the president with an ice cream cone stuck on his forehead and so on.

I am doing illustrations for books I wrote now. My latest one in progress is the 4th edition of "THE COSTLIEST WATCH BRANDS". I have many drawings for the 3 previous editions, but I plan to do new ones now. Some of the watches shown are discontinued. The last painting I did was one I entered in a contest in a magazine. It is a "Sword & Sorcery' work with me as a Conan-like barbarian warrior and my gal Miyuki with me facing some villains.

I'm working on an oil painting with 2 swans in the foreground, against a background of sort of choppy pond water. The swans are back-lit, and I'm having a little trouble with the lighting effect...but I'll get it.

I am working on a western in black watercolor, a very typical classical western of a guy sitting on the ground in front of his horse,.....then I have a 24 x 30 river scene of the san gabriel river in Liberty Hill,Texas., I have another 24 x 30 bluebonnet scene (landscape) then two portraits then an 18 x 24 landscape and then a still life of red roses in a silver tea pot with light blue satin as a backdrop on a shiny maple tabletop with a string of pearls........really typical crap.

currently working on a mural of overbrook kansas on a wall in a retirement center there with my lovely and talented wife.
it is a bit more of a project than i thought it would be, too.
but i think it will be nice when we get it done. (both a nice mural, and nice to be done with it.)
