I think too young to appreciate it.

I think 5 is young, and it is unhealthy unless there is a limit. I have a 5 year old daughter and we have a PS2 in the house. We do have games she can play but because she has a choice of either PS2, Computer or TV everyday, (she is only allowed a half hour on 1 electronic everyday) She does not play with it that often. So it is hardly ever used. We resived it as a gift and frankly I could take it or leave it. I am sure she would have been happy with a computer game, or even a Vsmile that can be used with a TV instead. AND it is alot easier to find fun educational games for those instead of a PSP.

That's an awful lot of money spent on a toy that she's probably going to drop and break, or lose at the park. And how many games do they really make for 5 year olds? I cna't imagine that it would be very many for a system like that.

She's better off with cheaper, simpler things for now. Walk through the game section at Toys R Us with your inlaws (or go through yourself and then tell them some specific games that you approve of), and you'll see all sorts that are made for young kids. Some even have themes like Barbie, or Disney Princess.

My grandma got the Barbie and Spiderman mini-laptops for my cousins last year, and they were both 5 at the time. Those games were about $25 each, which is nothing compared to the $170 to $200 for the PSP.

Instead of a psp why not get her a Vteck computer or learning Video game system. They are much more educational and alot cheaper . I'd love my 5 yr old daughter to have one but the money isnt in the cards this holiday season.

yes. the games for psp are a bit too advanced for the average 5 year old. instead games that help teach reading and math skills like leap frog would be a better investment for her future. Society is becoming too dependent on video games. Our children need to love learning more then they do vidoes. I live in a safe neighborhood but, rarely see children playing outside. Why because they are sitting in front of the TV playing video and watching junk all day. No wonder we are getting fatter and fatter.

She could probably use some of the rated E games, but what matters is what you think. You're the mom, and if you think any gift is inappropriate for your daughter and you don't want her to have it, you have the right to speak up. If you think she's too young for a PSP or otherwise don't want her to have one, you could suggest one of the VSmile game systems for your daughter. There is a portable one, kind of like a PSP, that might be good - easier for a little one, and more educational.

i have this same kind of situation with my in laws every year with my children . they either want to buy something useless or two old for them , or too expensive that it out shines what i can afford . over the years i have learned to sit back and leave them to it . at first i used to get so cross that i though what ever i said seemed to of no use and if i said they are not old enough i got told oh i think they are so in so's daughter/son has one and they are the same age or we thought it would be nice . so now i leave them to waste there money on it , if the kids play with it great if they don't i don't worry about it . at 5 she will probs pick it up quickly and if she doesn't , don't worry it saves you buying one next year when she asked for one .

I think it's a great idea!!! There are alot of games out there that will teach her things and let her have fun at the same time.

I guess the real question should be: If your in-laws didn't tell you what they were getting her, and they got her a PSP, what would you do...take it away or let her play with it?

what an expensive trash can filler. even if she is advanced enough to play the games, you know how 5 year olds are, when they are done they set it down and leave it. if that happens to be on the floor then someone will step on it.

maybe a less expensive hand held is better right now. it would be a shame for all that money to be spent and a week later it is broken. gameboy or something like that may be better. they can spend the money they save on the system to buy her lots of games to play.

Really? I would just be grateful.
My 2yo twins play on our Play station with me and my man. They love the car racing games. We actually went out and bought a heap of educational games for them to play with.
We never let them sit in front of the games all day, but we have a couple of hours a night of family time. And a few night a week we have a go.
One game we got was all about spelling and the ABC's. Since having this game my kids speech has really improved.
There is nothing wrong with them, only if you allow her to play all day every day. Why not allow her to play with you and you partner?? It is great for family time.

If your daughter is advanced enough to know what to do with it then I suppose its ok, but personally I feel she is a little too young. It will probably just end up getting broken or put out of the way and never used.
