It's two years and eight months old and eight pounds. What are they like? Is there anything I should know about the breed?

I chose this dog, because my husband and I are wanting to get rid of our lab, he's not good with our son and maybe even has some chow in him. The new owners of my father-in-law agreed to take the lab in a trade for the terrier because they have five dogs as is, the terrier belonged to the mans father who is now in a nursing home.

rat terriers are great dogs if trained correctly early on and heavily socialized with children early on. if not, they can be problematic, like many terrier breeds, when with children. In fact many breeds (perhaps most) are not necessarily good with children if not properly socialized.

they require a lot of exercise... read what they were bred to do.

I would have the dog assessed by a trainer (certified) prior to bringing the dog home. Better to do this up front than bring a dog home, again, that may not work out.

Most people just do not realize how important socialization is for a dog (and cats too, actually).

I wish you the best of luck!

I hope you have a lot of energy!! My neighbor has a rat terrier that has to be at least 5 years old (we have lived here 5 years and they had the dog when we moved in).

His name is Sammy and WOW does he have the energy. He just goes and goes and goes like a tornado on the rampage!!

What a cutie though!! He will play fetch with you for HOURS! My eight year old son was out with him a couple of weeks ago and played fetch with him for like 3 hours! He did finally wear him out but only for a few minutes. He took a break and started up again.

He is a good dog and stays in the yard and he is really friendly. He does bark a lot too, which is the only bad thing that I can say about him, and I have to admit I am not partial to small dogs, but I do like him!

ok ill be blunt! I actually have a Jack Russell Terrier - the acceptable ratter. Hes a handful! definite he's as hyper as defined. definite they could be unfavourable (yet with acceptable and early training u can counter that one), He does ok on his very own yet hes by no capacity left for greater effective than an hour or 2, im fortunate sufficient to have the capacity to take him to artwork. As for apartments, id supply it a pass over. those adult men are actually not lap canines. If i capture him drowsing its in basic terms cos hes fallen asleep by utilising twist of destiny! I actually have a 5 year old son who keeps him busy - they the two have a similar quantity of capacity (reads: limitless). wish this facilitates! good success!

okay so they are HIGH energy and love to chase things! They arent really freindly towards kids. they chew things! Really cute thow. And if you have any sliding glass doors i would put sonething colorful on it for the first two weeks so they dont run into it.now lets focus on the good. They are great for riding next to a horse. They are soo very smart. And very fun to have in the house. They are best in pairs. And are great with kids 11 and up!

I don't know why you chose a rat terrier, but everyone has their favorites. It is not a dog that is good around small children and is a yappy, barking, hard to train breed.

Wow, terriers are terrible dogs. They're loud, obnoxious, hyperactive, and they bite at people constantly. Do not, I repeat, DO NOT get a rat terrier, stick with your lab and find it some help if its really that bad.

Wow get ready for a very energetic animal. Most that I have encountered are very fast, active, and fun to play with. Just make sure to give them plenty of time each day to run and burn off some energy!

This is a very poor choice. They are noisy, feisty and have excess energy. Hope you have a nice dog run because you are going to need it.
