No proper birth control and no safe sex :))))
The two elements that regulate population growth are birth and death rates. The question then is whether a slow down in population growth will be a result of a decrease in births or an increase in deaths. If the population continues to grow without bound, nature will take over and the death rate will rise to solve the problem. Unfortunately, this is not the most attractive solution for us. Instead, we would rather control the number of births in order to attack the source of this world problem and save the Earth from being over-capacitated.

The scarcity of resources and wars over them.
Pollution and deaths because of that.
Famine and misery because of that.
And finally, when the ordinary citizen is ready to throw up his hands in despair, population growth stabilizes, rates drop, population even declines a little and we all take a deep breath and enjoy the spectactle of the misty sun over a grey concrete landscape.
Education and wealth brings down population growth. What we need is taking it under control BEFORE above said wars and deaths occur.

What's even scarier is that compared to 100 years ago, energy consumption per human being has increased ten folds. The worst culprits are in the west. Therefore the dropping birthrate in these countries may not be something bad.

We are too many! Soon there won't be any natural resources left! We are all polluting this planet too much! We should cut down on many things and not be so selfish as just to think about our own well-being! This planet is not ours!

The more the merrier.
No it is't getting better. The more people there are the more that are being left behind from being in the main stream of life.

in the past an incredible amount of new borns would die. Now, medicine improves, and less die. We have so much more sophisticated ways of keeping people alive now. .One good thing about it is that the more people born, the people chances the world gets to have great minds and ideas.

Well Misviv I would never think, I would agree with any of your opinions, but that one about culprits and their dropping birth rates makes me think you are darn right!
