In no modern court in the USA is the Swearing on the Bible still used.

In the few places where it is still practiced, the witness can insist upon an alternate swearing and this must be allowed without penalty.

I'm a non believer, do I have swear on a book of Dawkin's or Lord of the Rings or something by Tolstoy? If I do can I have a passage from on those books displayed in the lobby?
If I converted to Islam and swore on the Koran, can I have a passage from that book in the lobby?

I think it's to do with separation of church and state, you may swear on a book you consider holy, but that's for your benefit. The court is not some version of a Christian Shariah.

You no longer have to swear on a Bible. The 10 commandments should not be posted in public because we are a nation of many and no religious beliefs. The first four commandments apply only to the Christian God and worshiping it and have no other God. Even our founding fathers disagreed in religious beliefs. They sought to have a country where people could follow any personal beliefs they liked but where religion would be compelled upon none.

I don't think you HAVE to swear on the bible in court.

As for the 10 commandments, what would be the use of displaying this?

These are specific commandments relating to one religion, nothing to do with the law of a country. A country which in your case has no official religion.

You don't have to swear on the bible.

I had to testify once as a witness to an accient. this was about fifteen years ago I politely told them I would not swear on a false book to false G'ds. They have an alternative oath, they just don't get challenged enough. The xtian bible has no place in the court system unless we are going to drag in the Torah, Q'ran, and every other holy book in existance. I think the above posters who said they no longer use it are correct in the majority of places, certainly some of rural small town America may still try to do this.

You don't have to swear on the bible - you can just affirm that what you are saying is true.

You can't display the 10 in schools because the second commandment forbids graven images and a copy of the 10 is a graven image. If you really believed in them, you wouldn't want to display them. If you want to display them, you either don't understand them or you don't believe in them. Either way, the point is moot because you live in a secular nation and we have separation of church and state - though not nearly enough of it.

I'm a Christian and I refused to swear on the Bible in court and affirmed instead. The Bible says it's wrong to swear by anything.

Ok, I know that you've seen people doing that in old tv shows and movies, but no American courts swear people in using bibles or other religious texts anymore.

The 10 commandments have been edited so many time over that it is no joke!

God the Father says, "Honour thy father and thy mother"
God the Son says, "Unless you hate your father and your mother.... you can't follow me!"

God the Father says to keep Saturday as a day of rest eternally and for ever as a 'mark' or a 'sign' for his people...
Saint Paul said that any day is OK! Christians made Sunday the day of rest.

God the Father says Not to covet...
Saint Paul says, "Covet the gifts"

and so on... there are more... about murder and so on...

The 10 commandments have been hidden in the Ark of the Covenant for 900 years...!!! King David didn;t have the foggiest idea what was written in the 10 commandments!! and so on... Your religion is based on Christian fervor...
