Generally no, unless the staff of the restaurant is familiar with you. Many restaurants only grant employee meal discounts on days they work. Or sometimes only a certain percentage when they work and when they don't(50% off during work, 20% off the clock, for example). If its a fastfood restaurant don't be afraid to grab the supervisor and ask them, but understand your family member might get in trouble if you do that. Your best bet, is to not even ask about the discount, ecspecially if your family member isn't there, have them find out on there next shift the rules.

If the employee is not dining with them, I would say no; however, I have seen it done before. It is against the rules for my particular establishment, but there was an exception for who knows what reason.

We are required to be with our family/friends (up to 8) in order for others to benefit from the discount (excluding alcoholic beverages). We are also able to get a discount at our sister stores (3 different restaurants in total) with up to 8 people, as long as we have our most recent check stub and a valid photo ID. The discount offered is 25% off the bill, which is a rather nice discount!

I would imagine this rule changes for each place.

I've only seen discounts offered to families when they are well known by management - corporate and family owned. Otherwise, if my family was to come in and I knew my managers well enough, I would ask them if I had to ring in any sodas, or anything that I could get myself. Or I'd ask them to buy a dessert. A couple of managers that I've been really close to over the last couple of years will just surprise me, even after I rang every single thing in, and buy my husband's and daughter's meals. That's in a corporate place, btw. Typically, I don't see it happen too much. It depends on the place, realtionships within, and how much money the manager has to work with if you are close.

Depends on the restaurant, but generally not.
HOWEVER, when one of my daughters worked at Outback Steakhouse, they gave discount to family members as long as she was either eating with us OR working on that shift.

depends on company policy.. when i worked for wendy's your discount was only for food purchased by you during or immediately before or after your shift. no one stood there and made sure you didn't eat it but you had to buy it adjacent to your shift.

That isn't even right. The discount is for the employee only.
