It's not your laptop, it's your router settings.
IM programs need as many as 12 "ports" open on your router to work properly. So, read the Router Manual, they often have popular IM settings pre-configured, BUT not enabled.
Then, your other contacts, WITH routers, need to do the same thing.
TIP: You and your friends should try Skype (free) instead, it is invisible to routers and the quality is superior to IM, and is a great way to test audio and video hardware.
