Typical homework question. I'll let you in on a secret. A writer does not write with a message in mind. They write a good story because they know it's a good story and a publisher agrees with them (that's how it gets published).

After it gets published, critics and educators go over the book looking for the "message" they say has to be in there. Oh, and the writers generally read the reviews so they know what the message is because they didn't put it in deliberately.

Of course, you can't use this answer for your class because it's not what the teacher wants to hear. However, it is the truth. Go ahead and print it out and see what happens.

The only element I am concerned about is that they have something to say... and of course they have to know how to put the words together to get out the message.

Strunk's "Elements of Style" is free online for anyone who wants some help on the second point. Near the bottom of the list.
