~That would depend entirely on the regulations on trade, manufacturing, environmental considerations and similar related areas that democratic government imposed or failed to impose.
The Soviet union was a democratic republic (although suffrage was extremely limited).and they didn't fare so well.
The US is also a Republic, not a democracy, at least not in
the classical sense. It would never survive if it was a direct democracy. The US economy is doing well, and has gotten healthier since the Trust Busters of the last century started to regulate business.
China is not in any sense of the term democratic. China's industry and economy are going like gangbusters.
The freedoms generally associated with "democracies" usually extend to the economic sector. That would encourage development, would it not? However, what Hitler did for the German economy shows what a dictator can do, and monarchy still works well in Saudi Arabia and Kuwait.
Must be the form of government is only one of many factors involved in the economic, industrial, technological and other development of a nation and a people, huh?

Positive economic development is economic development that benefits the largest number of citizens.
Leave entrepreneurs alone and they will always be looking for new products to bring to market, thus creating more jobs.
If the public decides they like the new product if preference to others the entrepreneur will succeed. If not he'll go broke.
In a free market it is always the consumer, by voting with his wallet, that determines the winners and losers.
A free market can exist under any type of government, but in the real world the more oppressive the type of government the more likely it is that the politicians will impose themselves in the process and decrease the public's choices while increasing the costs.
