I have been through the set up procedure but the mic is not being detected. i.e my voice is not moving the graphic indicator regardless of volume setting. Maybe it's just a faulty mic. What do you think?

I had trouble with a new mike...
I almost trashed it, and then stumbled upon a ticked check box somewhere in my sound configuration which said something like "Enable front panel microphone"...

I unchecked this, and the rear panel mike socket switched on!

Good Luck!

Windows key + R.
mmsys.cpl
enter
Audio
Sound recording 'Volume'
Select microphone
make sure the slider is pretty well to the top.

Could be faulty mic but prob not. I spose you've got the plug firmly plugged into the pink socket.
The program you are wanting to use it with sometimes has settings to determine which source. Often they default to the modem which is a sound source but obviously the wrong one.
Also if you are using some 5.1 sound cards you need to configure them cause they sometimes allocate the pink socket to the centre/subwoofer.

WindowsXp is notorious for this problem and it could be one of many little glitches.
Your mic. may be muted, it may have the master volume turned down, or any of several reasons.
Go to your control panel after clicking on start and go to classic view.
Then go to system-audio devices and check your volume out.
To do a more comprehensive test, click start-help and support-and on the left, second from the bottom you will find "fixing a problem", click that and test your /games sound and video problems\.

Most of the time, mikes are easy to use. Just plug them in and they will work.
Is this microphone old or new? Before you rip open your system, try plugging in another microphone.
It can be as simple as a bad mike . You can ask to have it replaced if still brand new.
