Try doing a bit of really simple yoga.
Sit cross-legged on a flat surface.
Put your hands facing up/down on your knees, so you don't fidget.
And you can sit with your back to a wall to ensure good posture.
Breathe really slowly - inhale 6 counts, exhale 8 counts. (and repeat like mad of course)
Calm down, (don't beat yourself up for not being able to fall asleep), go through anything that's keeping you awake in your head slowly. And if you're a Christian, end with a prayer.
That SHOULD help you fall asleep.
Hope you get to sleep soon,
I know how terribly frustrating insomnia is!

leave the television on, or some sort of noise to distract you as you fall. every morning i come home from work and i fall asleep on the couch watching TV. i have tried to go right into bed, but I'll stare at the ceiling. something about trying to concentrate and using my eyes that sends me off to sleepy land much easier...
dont get into the habbit of medicating yourself just yet because it will become a habbit, but if you just want to sleep and don't give a flying rat's patoot, NYQuil is the best friend you will ever have

I've got one that really works.I used it many times.

Focus on NOT falling asleep. If you try hard not to sleep you'll get mowed after some time. It not only working, it's also a fun one, it really strikes on you and forces your eyes shut.

Trust me.

ok - my thai wife taught me this for my long flights back to USA - just sit quietly or for you, lie in bed and close your eyes - relax - don't open your eyes - you will fall asleep...

I think of something that I want to think/meditate about and relax - knowing I will not open my eyes again.. it works really well - very comforting - even if you do not sleep, being quiet w/eyes closed will be near as restful - - sleep well

meditation
exercise
chamomile tea
warm bath
soothing music
melatonin (its not as forceful as a sleeping pill. if you need to be awake it won't keep you sedated.)

if these don't help check out the site below.
if you still can't sleep try an over the counter sleeping pill.

warm milk with a splash of vanilla extract a little sugar. the warmed milk has a chemical that will relax you and help you fall asleep, the vanilla extract is 35% alcohol so it takes the edge off and sugar helps cut the flavor of the vanilla.

Are you stressed? Take a mild over the counter sleeping pill or try warm milk.

this might seem weird, but try to listen to some music and read a book at the same time. the music will calm ur nerves and the book will make ur mind tired. I hope this works. it usually works for me!
