Most, if not all, spiders are capable of biting: no matter where they are from. Of course, certain spiders are more prone to biting people. ;)
You'd have to ask your friend or a doctor what type of spider he was bitten by. Different spider venoms have varying effects, of course.

All spiders chew. All spider bites are venomous unless they have used up the deliver on prey just prior to biting anything/one else. Most spiders within the uk don't have fangs robust adequate to interrupt our skin, so the strength of the venom is not an obstacle. However the skin around the eyes could be very satisfactory and for that reason it is far more probably if bitten by means of a spider in or around the eye,for the fangs to interrupt the epidermis, and for a reaction to occur. This may also be both a response to the toxicity and/or an allergic reaction.

All spiders can bite. Apparently the most poisonous of all out native spiders is actually a daddy-long-legs, it's just that its mouthparts aren't big enough or something to actually pierce our skin.
Most people also don't know there's a variety of black widow that lives in Britain. It isn't poisonousto us, however, and so doesn't get any attention. It's browny- black, shiny, with short thick legs and lives in dark places like sheds. It doesn't have the red markings of the foreign type.
Anyway, the spider that bit your friend could have been anything. Chances are he's just had a nasty reaction to it. There are no deadly speces in Britain.
If you take a look on the British Arachnological Socoieties webpage, under FAQS they talk about spider bite first aid, and the three most likely clprits, including the false black widow. They mention that even a bad reaction such as vomiting is only temporary.

All spiders chunk. All spider bites are venomous till they have used up the provision on prey only beforehand of biting something/one else. maximum spiders in the united kingdom have not got fangs good sufficient to interrupt our epidermis, so the ability of the venom isn't a controversy. even nonetheless the exterior around the eyes is amazingly high quality and consequently it rather is lots greater in all probability if bitten by utilising a spider in or around the attention, for the fangs to interrupt the exterior, and for a reaction to ensue. it rather is often the two a reaction to the toxicity and/or an allergic reaction.

Yeah! All spiders bite, but they cannot necessarily puncture the human skin!
If it does, you will know ALL about it! Take it from somebody who has suffered a Black Widow bite!

All spiders bite, it's how they kill their prey. It could be that he's allergic to it, or it might have been a "foreign" spider come in on fruit or something.

there are no spiders in the uk that can kill you because they are always too pi**ed drinking daiquiris, and the odd gin and tonic.
The guy above obviously doesn't know his spiders like i do.
He is right about the straw though.
