That's an urban legend, a myth; no truth to it at all. It's Quite frankly, I think lower of a person who makes a snap judgment on a woman's character based on a mere piece of jewelry than of a woman who wears the piece. I find those broad and baseless generalizations hateful and ignorant. It's very nasty and judgmental to cast aspersions on another person based on an old wives tale with no basis in reality.
Anklets are a very ancient piece of jewelry, beaded ankle bracelets being found in late stone age caves and decorative chains in bronze age settlements. They are part of the history of personal adornment. Egyptians wore them, so did the Etruscans. Anklets are very popular among the people of the world who live in warm climates and who wear either sandals or no shoes. At one time in history exposure of any skin, even the tiniest glimpse of an ankle was considered obscene so that's part of the origin of that myth. It was a way for pompous colonizers (especially europeans) to consider themselves better that the natives of whatever place they were colonizing and a way to discourage appropriation of native and or ethnic dress..
An anklet is a nice little adornment for the ankle. Anklets can be worn by women in all ages and stages of life. They can be simple or expensive. A woman who wears an anklet is usually confident, strong and isn't afraid to express herself. If anyone thinks nasty thoughts based on an anklet, then the problem is the person thinking those thoughts, not the woman wearing the anklet. If anyone says anything while you wear an anklet, then you are free to tell them they are ignorant fashion challenged morons.

I love wearing those little friendship bracelets as anklets, but I don't know of anyone else who does. I'll probably start wearing them again this summer. :)

I never heard of that. I wear one on occassion. They are to be worn as a ring. They left ankle means you're taken and the right means you're available.
