I have in-wall cabling (cat. 5) done already and need to use both Ethernet and WiFi. all my in-wall cables converge to the basement though, and I can't get a signal from my WiFi router there.

Well the best thing would be to put an ACCESS POINT on one of the "in wall" cables upstairs. It is easier to setup for what you are asking than attempting another router. Some routers allow you to set them as just an access point.

The difference is that an AP is just a wireless connector without the routing functions, it uses the existing system router for all other functions except adding a wireless connector. You can actually put AP's on every floor for max coverage!

Nearly all manufacturers make Access Points for just this use!

You can mount the wireless unit anywhere, but if you also need some wired machines I suggest you use a plain wired router with a switch in the basement, then connect a wireless access point to a centrally placed socket and connect this to the switch. If you try to use 2 routers you will get conflicts, to use one combined wireless/wired router, you are losing your centralisation.
