Get close to a nesting goose or swan (_not_ recommended!) and you'll find out. They don't just peck you, they beat you up with their wings. Also, if you have Mockingbirds in your area (and who doesn't these days), watch one hunting on the ground some time. You'll see it flicking its wings out in a very interesting, almost mechanical, series of jerks. I figure it's using the wing flashes to startle or distract whatever it's trying to catch. I'm sure that there are other ways birds can use their wings to attack or otherwise help their offense - what I'm not sure of is whether any of these techniques will help you in your martial-arts (?) efforts unless you spend a lot of time watching what they do and how they do it.
