I just went in the Spain section. The questions were about restaurants, taxi fares, travel safety, etc. This is how the Greek section used to be when I first joined: I used to answer about hotels, islands, monuments and culture. Many of us became friends and shared personal issues, during that time, and it was an enjoyable site. From some point onwards, it became a place where people insult others for national reasons and some time after that it became the place to insult for no reason at all, and do their best to erase innocent questions. Can you identify the moment this happened?

Can you also identify who or what is to blame for this? Because the old members who were here since more than 1 year and made this site an enjoyable company can't be to blame, as we would have created the problem from the beginning.

I'm new here so I can say when this started happening or who is to blame for the situation... However, as in most aspects of our life, us Greeks have the tendency to ruin everything that has the possibility to take our mentality to the next level... there are some illiterate who just have nothing to do and start to insult or try to saw they're "somebody" just because they're truly nobody... As if this behavior would make others think less of a truly gifted person, or make this person feel bad about themselves... It really saddens me that we, Greeks, saw this face to foreigners as well...

It is not an accident that diversity of thought is in the Greek DNA. The glory and the catastrophe of the race. This indeed is a travel section which apparently some people have used as a forum to vent their prejudices and to impose questions rhetorically whose answers they already know. That deviates from the intent and purpose of the site.
I do not know when or how it started as I am a casual visitor here. Perhaps the best defense for it would be to ignore inflammatory, non pertinent questions altogether.

Although this section is part of "Travel" I never minded seeing questions that wouldn't ask travel information but other things that would concern the Greek society. And surely I never minded answering. After all what I've always believed is that Y!A is a community where people can express their opinions freely.
Yet opinions are based on arguments not insults...
I'm afraid I can't put the blame on anyone...we all are old enough and responsible enough to judge our own education and behavior.
I'm only sorry cause I made friends through this section, and now I don't even feel like coming back here any more...

Dear Christina
Somerime during last summer perhaps? As far as I am concerned I would like to make my intentions and position "crystal clear": a) I didn't attack or insult any other member of this section although I did receiced a report for no reason of which I am aware of! May somone enlight me in this subject? I would appreciate it very much!
b) I am of the opinion that this section is a good place to discuss about Greek history, politics and related subjects (Anyone is invited to look in my profile and to see that all my questions but two belong to this category ) Plus the answers which I received when I posted my answers to History section were something of a disapointment for example when I aked for a comparison between Athens and Rome one answer was a small diatribe about the Plato's theories about the ideal State and another was about the rise of Rome (with historical mistakes) Not exactly what I asked for isn't it?
I sincerely hope that one way or another these problems will sort out
Kind regards
Christos Voulgaris
PS I will continue to post mainly historical questions....

Dear Xristina,
Most answers here are rather based on emotions than facts.
During the touristic months from April to September, the section serves well its purpose. Hundreds of potential tourists ask all sort of questions and many of us are keen to answer. Thereafter, the site remains abandoned, no one asks and those that remain -mostly Greeks- turn the section into a cultural-sociological one. Occasionally, people disagree ending in fights that naturally hurt feelings.
Unlike Greece, Spain has tourism all year around with more than...60 million tourists (!) visiting the country and not just in the summer. The interest of the Spanish section is immense and the section is focused on that. I can suggest to you Spanish blog sites where the disputes for the Basques, the Barcelona vs. Madrid, terrorism and the north vs. south are endless.
That's all I see really. Other than that, you could also wonder what exactly divides us or on what exact matter are we disputing in? I am not really sure I can answer any of these questions.
For the winter months, the existence of a Travel section without a reason of existence is causal to the misery you observe.

I think these last few days things have started to change towards the better.Still it isn't like it used to be and many users can't or won't come back anymore, since there are people who keep reporting their every question/answer. Personally i don't think all Greeks should be united etc.I mean I'd rather have contacts and friends because of who they are not and not because they are Greek.Being Greek doesn't immediately mean you are a good person. And I do think we should all stop answering the provocative questions, cause that is exactly the reason why they keep coming back, because we give them the attention they crave for.
I won't accuse anybody as I think everyone has eyes and ears and everyone has his own opinions about why and when this started and maybe the truth is somewhere in the middle.
What I do think is we should find a way to be in the same "room" without biting each others head off.And just ignore those people we are not clicking with and let everyone be.But I guess that's an utopia...it would be nice though...and it would be more realistic,I doubt everyone here likes each and everyone of his neighbors but I don't think they start fighting every time they see each other or ruin each others houses/properties or falsely report them to the police, because that isn't accepted in an everyday civilization...so why not act this civic here too?

I'm not sure when it happened exactly, because when I started coming to this section it was already happenning.
I was quite happy to realize there were many people from Greece, I actually wasn't aware when I first joined this site.
However, everytime I tried to add someone to my contacts, I wasn't able to. I guess people are so afraid of trolls, that they don't trust anyone anymore.
Really it's quite sad. I wish I knew why. It woud be nice to go back to the way things used to be, like you said.
Anyway, I'm glad you allowed me to have you as a contact. Even though we've never met, I think you 're a very sweet and caring person.

Many things on Y!A are not logical.
If you compare Greece with other sections on Travel, it's among the most frequent. Denmark, for example, ends with only few questions, very often. On the other hand, some sections are full of people who know each other and ask all kinds of questions that are not related to travel, more like for polls and surveys and similar. Basically, I think it's more interesting not to have only questions related to hotel prices and similar, but share some other things with real people. Only my opinion. Other sections also have many provocative questions and trolls are everywhere. Yahoo is owner of this site and if they can't fight (or won't) some things, we definitely can't do anything about it. I participate in many different sections and what I can see is that religion/spirituality is full of atheists, books/authors is full of Harry Potter questions, etc. I don't like that especially, but there is nothing I can do. Besides to answer the best way I can, and put trolls and malicious people to the place where they belong. I am mostly confused with this blocking, thumbs down, etc - but there are apparently all kinds of people who have different views on the things, same as in life. The big difference is only that we are here anonymous, people are hidden behind their profiles and avatars and they not necessary behave same as in the real life. What if we could, only for a day, be able to see who is reporting us or giving thumbs down? I wonder how many people would be surprised with what they see.
Greece section, as all other here, is made for all people who want to participate, and for Greeks on the 1st place who can give the best answers about their country. It's simple as that. Different opinions are more than welcome, only without personal offenses. At least one thing is sure: Greece travel is very popular.

i would really like to know the NAME of the person who according to some people is to blame for the situation
as it concerns me , many of my questions have been deleted for no reason but i dont care a bit for that
i feel "obligated" to "defend my country from the attacks by our "friendly" neighboors and i dont care if i have all my answers deleted
as it concerns the greek people here i have "argued" with some of them but for me the point is to get some opinions ( which is completely normal to be diffrent than mine) from other greeks in matters that concern Greece
Can pls someone answer so that i understand?
all these mails that you say that have been sent, were sent by greeks?
