Because the victim's chemistry still works. Which leads to hope that things will change. That the other person is only misunderstanding, or has personal problems, or whatever, just an excuse to keep hope alive.
I know it's very hard to escape from this sad situation, but life itself and instict of survival come to close the circle.
One has to be patient, and caring to him/helsef.
Because that's the critical timing that self esteme can be lost , and there's going to be along way before one finds it again.

Some people will do this because they don't want to hurt someone else's feelings, not necessarily because they are a pushover. If you are one of those people and you are tired of someone's behavior, there are nice ways to tell them that you don't like that or to just stop. So don't let someone bother you when you can at least let them know their behavior bothers you.

Because though we dislike it, we don't dislike it enough to risk a confrontation. What if they stop being our friend (if they are), what if they start trying to get back at us and cause us trouble, what if it causes a big scene and everyone stares and thinks we're bullies or rude or whatever... many people will go to extremes to avoid any kind of confrontation, including just "sucking it up" even though we know it's unfair.

That is a difficult question. Usually we let only the people we love get away with this type of behavior. We put up with it, hoping it will change and things will get better. Sometimes we tolerate it because we are afraid to act....thinking we will lose this person. Often it is due to insecurity, and fear of the unknown........ :(

Take a deep breath and say enough is enough. Either walk out on them when they behave like that or firmly state that you just don't like the way they behave.

Just a guess here, ,but most of us don't want any trouble, so we shut up and just take it instead of speaking out about it.
