It is the worst pain imaginable, you cannot comprehend just how bad it is, but as soon as your little bundle arrives it is gone, you forget how bad it was and it was soooooo worth it!

Yes it does hurt, if your labour starts with contractions at home or broken waters etc, you will find that it will be a gradual increase of pain, you will be able to tolerate it to a certain extent, if the pains get worse and closer together or you can't cope you will go to the hospital and they will assess you. I had an epidural with both of my labours, my daughter (first pregnancy) my waters broke at home and labour started an hour later, here I was walking around with slight period pains and thinking OMG what are all the other women talking about it isn't that bad, I hated the pressure of the baby so low down in my pelvis. Well I shouldn't have spoke so loud, my contractions went from being very mild and a few mins apart to oh so bad and one on top of another. I went to the hospital a 8am after labouring at home since 5am, I was walking my was through all the contractions and trying to speed things up. Oh how I wanted an epidural something to take the pain away!!! They talked me into a shot of pethidine and it only made me groggy and sleepy, but waah the pain was still there and awful. But 11am they called an anethetist and I told him I loved him when he turned up (pethidine is bad stuff, lol) oh it was bliss. The midwives turned the epidural down when it was getting time to push, i didn't feel pain then, just pressure of her crowning. Then she was out and it was all over.
My son, well he was induced so I went 18 hours with no pain relief (not my idea, just couldn't have any because I wasn't in proper labour) I was so over it and just wanted to go home, not that would stop the pain, I get sooky and irrational when in pain. The finally gave me an epidural so the Doctor could get my labour moving along with brealking my waters and putting me on a syntocin drip to make my contractions more effective. When you are in so much pain that it is coursing all through your body, then it is all gone, OMG it is the best feeling in the world.
You don't feel like you are dying, sometimes you want to die when contraction hits, true some women handle it a whole lot better than others, some women have a lot more pain. But it will hurt and your girly bits will burn and feel like they are going to be torn to smitherines if you don't have pain relief, but you will get through it and within 2-3 months you wont remember it in graphic detail and most likely would like another baby in the distant future. I am ttc #3 and I am a girly woosbag, I am hooked on the epidural all the way. Depending on your pain tolerance is how you will handle your labour, but you will be getting a good thing at the end of something so painful.
You can do it!!!

I did the same thing you're doing before delivering my first. I just really wanted to know what to expect...so I could prepare mentally for it. I must have interviewed 300 women. I agree that every delivery is different and every women's experience is different, like how well she can tolerate pain. I had 3 natural deliveries...no epidurals. The pains were definitely just like menstrual cramps...only much more severe. BUT, they work up to that level of severity. They start out very mildly uncomfortable. And you get a short break in between contractions! A good time to rest & recouperate from the one before, an have some ice chips! I can be done without the meds, however, if I had it to do over again, I probably would use the epidural. I just don't see the sense in enduring all that the end of the labor brings when you don't have to. Good luck & relax. The pain does come to an end and the baby on the other end of it is so worth it!

I was also terrified before I had my son but once I went into labour, I actually wasn't worried about what would happen next. It was wierd because here I was terrified for 8 months and went it actually started to happen I was more concerned with what was happening in the moment.
I had an epidural but they took a long time before they gave it to me because they couldn't get hold of the anaethetist at 2 in the morning (I also should have let them know sooner I wanted one but I didn't know what to expect). The contractions were flippin' painful but I cannot tell you how the pain actually felt. With the epidural, the birth was a pleasure. I never felt a thing and could actually enjoy the birth.
Personal choice - I would do it all over again.

Each labour is completly different, with my first child, i had a very easy drug free birth and it was pretty much pain free but with my second son, i was in agony from the first contraction all the way through. And it doesnt matter how much pain you go through cause the moment that precious baby is in your arms it all goes away!

that depends on the person really
sorry
i had 3 kids and all my labors where natural and under 6 hours
i got in the hot tube to relax with the last one and it helped speed things up too
it does hurt but as soon as you see the baby it's like... poof...... gone..... no more pain
there is worse pain than child birth, tooth aches
i say period cramps are worse sometimes too, they last for hours, contractions come and go
best of luck if you are expecting

No, it doesn't feel like you're dying. It feels like cramps from hell only sharper. I suggest making sure that the hospital that you deliver at allows epidurals because no one told me that the hospital I went to didn't do that and I was angry. That would have made all the difference in my hellish birth experience.

I've been asking loads of people how painful it will be, now that my due date is getting closer.
You have your extremists who say it's the worst pain you'll ever go through.
You also have others who say it's long, exhausting, painful but tolerable.
You also have those who had an easy time.
People get through it and the baby will come out!

Well with mine, I didn't feel anything, I was on the epidural, it worked wonderful for me. And I will be having it again for more kids in the future. I don't think I could of dealt with the pain without it.

Every experience is different. My first was awful but my second was a doddle. Some people have no problems with their first.
But... you can make it worse by fearing it.
I like warm water around me for labour.
